Why does the EU sit idly by and watch it's borders invaded by the modern day Vandals? Surely it is time to accept that their disastrous border policy is hopeless before the inevitable bloodshed ensues.

The system is a disaster but I would be interested to know what the solutions could be? One hard option is not to help boats in trouble if they are clearly migrant boats. Another is to send anyone back who is caught landing in Europe but that's not easy if they have no papers- although we could try starving them in detention camps or interrogating them until they confess where they came from so we can send them off in that general direction on another dinghy. Europe could stop border movement without papers and therefore make them all stay in the country they landed in- usually Greece or Italy- which would make those countries more vigilant about who they let in. Tough measures like this may deter some from trying to make it to Italy/France/UK but given that these people are prepared to sail across the sea in a tiny dinghy it may be that a few more hurdles won't deter them.
What solutions can you suggest TTT/Fender/anyone?

Rome isn't just another Italian city it is the capital of the Christian world and a prize target for Islam. Flooding the city with the teeming illiterate mob, is only the first stage of the assault plan, then comes the mosque building (the dream being one larger than the Vatican) and then the clerics take over.
It's happening all over Europe and our politicians stand by frightened to condemn it.

So is it all being orchestrated by a group of leading Muslims somewhere, Khandro? Do these illiterate migrants know that this is why they are being loaded onto boats and are they given instructions on where to go?

fiction-factory’s notion of starving them is a bit dramatic, but that aside the only solution is to stop rescuing boats, and turning away any that do make it under their own steam. Perhaps if we were to do that, those intending to make their way to Europe would think twice before embarking on such a perilous journey.

Any 'turning away' would need to be done many miles out or they would just try again unless every bit of coastline could be monitored.

I suppose photos of a few thousand corpses washed up on Greek island beaches might deter some but I feel the traffickers will still convince the desperate that the risks are small and the rewards are great so the tide will continue

Are you saying that because traffickers will still convince people to make the journey, we should accept that - and the passengers?

I think rescuing them is the humanitarian thing to do: but after doing so the ship's captain needs to work out which way is south (perhaps they can ask their navigator ?) so they can return the rescued to the place they foolishly left.

You could just read my posts again, naomi- it's all there. I wasn't suggesting anything - i was just wondering how tough you felt we should be. It seems to me the answer is very tough and as part of that you are happy to let people drown close to European shores as it means less people make it here alive even though it may not deter many others from making the journey.

Perhaps we should look at where the migrants are coming from, and stop pretending that it's none of our business what goes on there. It clearly is.

It's complicated though isn't it jim. We have clearly contributed to problems in Iraq, Libya and maybe some other areas through our intervention and this has led to the spread of IS and internal issues driving people out, but in the case of Syria we have not intervened to the same extent and seem unable to stop the problems driving people out. Should we intervene or not?
