Was Margaret Thatcher Right?
I confess that during the 80's I was opposed to much of what she was doing, but I now think, with the luxury of hindsight, that I have to agree with Niall Ferguson, do you agree?

Go on, so all these ex council houses are now part of the high end property market. Not the bungalows or detached houses, not the seafront, or national park properties. Not the custom built 5 bedroom homes with a few acres, but the sink estate ex council houses. ,I have never heard such claptrap.
Where did all these people go who purchased their council homes? Back into rented council houses? More people means more houses needed. Bliar opened the floodgates with no concern for where the immigrants would live, and even less for the people who would eventually be denied a home to accommodate them. Usually people who were born and raised in the UK, I might add.

No Khandro, the point is, were there any at all, or is it just another Morning Star myth? Where is your proof that the Duke of Westminster was eager for this legislation to be carried, seeing as you have seen fit to name him on a public website?

But neither does the domestic rates system, OG. Why is it that the “ability to pay” argument is constantly wheeled out against the Community Charge but seems to be glossed over when the domestic rates which replaced it suffer exactly the same deficiency? Furthermore the current system bases its charges on the value of the property lived in (but not necessarily owned) and this has no bearing whatsoever on the financial situation of the taxpayer. At least the Community Charge levied a flat rate per head.

If you had read my link at 15:45 Sat. you would have read;
"The Duke of Westminster (who will make £10,000 from the tax) will end up paying roughly the same as an unemployed family in Lambeth!"
