I call English people English. I am Welsh, by the way

I've never ever heard of the word before.
It is my understanding that the term "P a k i" definitely IS offensive in the same way that "N****r" is.
It is especially offensive when it is used as a sweeping label for anyone who "looks like one" regardless of whether their ancestry does or doesn't originate in Pakistan.

AOG:
"it is just an abbreviation to a word, just as Brits, Scots, Aussies, Poles, Ruskis etc etc".
So with that in mind, would you be happy -for example- to shout out to someone in a crowd "Yoo hoo, hi, yes you - the P**i, you dropped your keys"?
There is no 'friendly' word for an Englishman in the way that Jock, Paddy and Taffy are used for the other three nations of the UK. As quite an old Scot, I have never heard anyone using 'sassenach' other than in jest.

Whereas a friend/colleague might say to Scotsman, "Hello, Jock", no one would ever say to an Englishman, "Hello, Sassenach", unless he was being jokily 'offensive'.
Never heard the word 'Sassenach' either.
When the grandchildren stayed over Christmas, I got a load of my childhood books down from the loft. My daughter started reading them and nearly choked, there was Ch- - - -e the Chinaman, then Little Black S- - -o and a few other dodgy ones that were once so innocent.

Only if I knew the person actually was a Pakistani, then of course I would shout "Yoo hoo, hi, yes you - Mr P**i, you have dropped your keys"?
Seriously? That is disgusting AOG
During WW2 the Germans called us Englanders and we called them Krauts. so called from a central European dish sauerkraut.

Irony alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, the klaxon's broken?
British people are called Brits, Australians are called ‘Aussies’, Scottish people are called 'Scots' so why is the term ‘***’ when used to describe people from Pakistan offensive? To my mind, any Pakistani taking offence at that is undermining himself, and that's sad. It’s almost as if he’s ashamed to be Pakistani.
It's not that, Naomi, it's the fact that anyone of colour were referred to as Pakis.

As I opined in my first post, language is all about context, delivery, and intent.

For as long as I can remember the term *** has been used as an insult.

So it' not much use asking people from Pakistan to use this word as an 'affectionate' label for themselves, when it used to be shouted at them in the street and daubed on walls.
Because the word was normally followed by a mouthful of abuse!!
Is this an infringement of the "so" rule ?
