I think AP's having read the thread had picked up on AOG's reply to Zacs yesterday at 15.26

/// Obama is of mixed race so it's not completely correct to say he's the first black president. ///
Most Black/White mixed race persons consider themselves to be black, never white, for some strange reason.
President Obama, is regularly classed as America's first black President.

Bringing in an element of choice or identification.

Now I've just read your response a bit more carefully DB.
"if Lenny Henry suddenly decided that he fancies being Asian, he simply declares it so and we all agree".
AFAIC it's treading on thin ground questioning someone's ethnic origins.
Do you know whether Mr Henry is black or mixed race? I don't and AFAIC it's HIS business as to how he identifies. I'd guess if you went up and asked him, he'd say he is British anyway.
It's not just a case of "fancies".
Over and above all this ....why should it matter?

Apparently it is called 'The one drop rule'.
From Wikipedia,
/// The one-drop rule is a social and legal principle of racial classification that was historically prominent in the United States asserting that any person with even one ancestor of sub-Saharan-African ancestry ("one drop" of black blood)[1][2] is considered black (*** in historical terms). This concept evolved over the course of the 19th century and became codified into law in the 20th century. It was associated with the principle of "invisible blackness" and is an example of hypodescent, the automatic assignment of children of a mixed union between different socioeconomic or ethnic groups to the group with the lower status.[3] ///
