Mikey - they don't even have to take languages anymore.
No, I wouldn't learn Polish or Urdu - but I would willingly volunteer to teach English to people coming into this country.

Peter Pedant - I may need some time to unravel your posts :-)

Naomi24 - good for you being prepared to give up time to do that.

But seriously - I think it's a fairly silly idea, because both languages are incredibly difficult beyond 'hello' and 'thank you', and whilst it's nice to be able to use a couple of phrases with Polish or Indian friends, it's unlikely to be of much practical use to people with English as a first language.

Sp1814,I am impressed!
If I was going to learn another language it would be Welsh, and that aint going to happen either, and I live in Wales.
If I had the commitment and the capability then, yes, I would.

/// Why can lots of European children speak English when our own kids can't reciprocate in any other language ? ///

Why do you down cry your own countries children, have you any proof of what you say?

I have two great nephews who moved to Spain as young children and soon picked up the Spanish language enough to speak it also in dialects Galician and Catalan.
Yes I would if I had the time.

Its double standards that we expect immigrants to learn our language but make no effort to learn theirs.

Also so many expats confess to not learning the language where they live following the age old rule of 'speaking slow and loud enough and they will understand'!!!

Islay,if you felt very strongly about something, anything in fact, would you not perhaps make time?
Vortex, I am already pushed but if you can find time in my day

Between working, volunteering, looking after a household and studying please feel free.
I can't see the benefit of Brits learning these languages. I think it's a dopey idea. Immigrants are living here and they need English.
