the programme took the *** out of the "gerrys"or was that lost on you mikey
'twas just a bit of fun !
At least Mikey thought that it was a 'funny' show.
Arrods, Mikey says it was "a not very funny show".
but a funny man !
Yes, indeed. I thought the whole thing was hilarious! I do so love the brilliantly 'daft'!
The show must have been well received on the continent, because Gorden's death is mentioned in Dutch paper De Telegraaf.
At least one Frenchman we knew adored 'Allo, Allo' and others thought it funny. I enjoyed them too, but didn't watch at first as I thought they might be touching on a subject too close to WW2. So sorry he's died at such a fairly young age. RIP Rene.
I fully agree with you Naomi - I loved watching the repeats currently being shown. (PS I just wondered if Mikey didn't find it funny, why did he use the word 'very'!)
I once read that, in an attempt to sell the programme to foreign TV companies, the BBC showed it to some German executives. They all thought that it was hilarious, but they said, "Can't show that in Germany." However, in 2008 it was, indeed, shown on German TV.
Arrods, who knows, but this thread has made me think of all the glorious daftness that was 'Allo Allo!", from flashing bedknobs to Gruber's "Little tank" and Madame Edith's singing! Lovely memories!

Arrods.....I thought I made myself very clear. I found Kaye to be funny and the script certainly had comedic moments......the Madonna with the big boobies was rather good.

Perhaps I should have written "not-very funny" instead. Its a figure that sounds rather better than it looks on paper.
some of the situations did work better in other languages - in the French, officer crabtree was given an Edward Heath accent, which is funny if you recall his address in French when the UK was trying to join the EEC (as it was) in the 1970s; truly toe curling.....
Thought GK was a very funny man......loved 'Allo,'Allo and was lucky to see the show performed live at 'The Dominion' theatre in Tottenham Court Road, London, back in 1989 and had many naughtier bits, due to it not being TV restricted, and a very, very funny show indeed....so good, I remember.... Absolutely wonderful....Had all the audience in stitches.
:-)
A very sad loss....Thanks for the great memories, Gordon, and rest in peace.....sleep well x
I don't have anything to say about 'Allo 'Allo but I did say awww when I read he had died. R I P Gorden Kaye.
RIP Gorden, you and your mannerisms from Allo Allo have given chaps of a certain age half a license to misbehave, you were brilliant.

I'm not shocked or surprised to read who didn't think Allo Allo wasn't funny perhaps you should go and find repeats of Secret Army watch them then come back and say that Allo Allo wasn't damn funny!
He was a funny and nice man and then the accident he had changed him unfortunately

I used to love the show. Somewhat repetitive but I used to wait for the catchphrases:

Fallen Madonna with ze big boobies
You stupid woman!
Listen carefully. I will say zis only wance
Would you like a ride in my little tank?
God moaning, I was just p!ssing by the door
...and many more.
I can still see Rene saying to Edith: 'You stupid woman..'
