Just heard that Tara Parker-Tomkinson has died aged 45.

With cancer one is described as "losing one's BATTLE" with cancer, whereas with other diseases, one just "dies."

andy-hughes/sqad, People are described as having ‘lost the battle’ with all sorts of illnesses – Michael J Fox, for example, is described as losing his battle with Parkinsons, and far from it being a stupid meaningless phrase, some people do battle illness – tremendously hard.

Naomi - No-one 'battles' a disease.

You suffer from a disease, and you do your best to stay a live as long as possible. Your longevity is often completely beyond your personal control - you are at the mercy of medication, and your own genetic implant, none of which you have any effect on, whether you rage against your condition, or accept it - the end result is exactly the same.

You no more 'battle' a disease that kills you than you 'battle' a bus before it runs you over.

Heavy Cocaine use does seem to cut short a lot of "Celebrities"lives.
I've read that the usual Cocaine bought in UK,is only 10 per cent Cocaine!..who knows what the other 90 is.Perhaps that's what kills people!
Who,in their right mind,would take such risk?

naomi...yes, you do make a good point.....BUT....few other diseases other than cancer one describes as "battling against"..perhaps motor neurone disease and Parkinsons Re the exceptions.

I agree with A-H...."will power?".......an emotive term when associated with terminal illnesses, but I am not sure that it actually exists and even if it did, how would you measure it?

I agree with Naomi it is a battle. It's not just the pain, it's fear and all the other emotions that come with that.

To me you suffer with a cold and you battle things like cancer.

She wasn't 'battling' anything - she had a tumour, and it appears to have helped to cause her death, there is no 'battle' involved.

Sqad, I don't think it can be measured, but I've no doubt whatsoever that it exists. I've watched some battle - and I've watched some give up.
