I'm 12 years away from the chalkface, High School Head of Maths so my current knowledge comes from my son-in-law, a Deputy Head. He loves teaching and has won national awards as a Physics teacher but the extraneous workload is out of control. I concede that ticking and giving a mark was a poor way of marking, they only looked at the mark but the current methods seems so time-consuming, multi-coloured comments and responses. The exam system seems to change every few years or so with all the implications for changing work schemes. As far as discipline is concerned I used to have a motto, 'Discipline is what other people's children need. Parents you never see are the ones with the badly behaved children generally, unless they want to complain about their darling's rights being abused.
I left 12 years ago because we were at the stage where I could afford to leave and take an early reduced pension but sometimes I miss it. To see the light go on in the eyes of a struggling child is wonderful.
