After almost 7 years of Tory-led government Labour should be snapping up seats like Pacman. Only a 50/50 split between Tory and UKIP in Stoke prevented their defeat there, and to lose a working-class area in Cumberland is unthinkable.

Depends on the definition of sinking without trace.

For example, a Party got beaten into third place by another Party who have just one MP.
Meanwhile the Party you cannot trace actually won one of the contests.

Not sure how winning the contest can be sinking without trace?

It's obvious the Labour party should split. What we're seeing is the right and left of the party fighting to hold on to the brand so they can watch the other lot wander off to SDP type obscurity.

Meanwhile the electorate keep voting for someone else.

Ludwig....I really don't think we are in early 80's, SDP territory yet. We might be in the future, but I still doubt it.

But people are still voting Labour, as can be seen by the results in the 2 by-Elections. If people could only be persuaded not to waste their votes on the loony-tune, no hope Parties, like UKIP, Labour would be in a much stronger position.

You seem to have forgotten already that the Labour vote was down in one area, and in the other Labour lost the seat for the first time in history.
