i saw this on the news thread earlier, doesn't seem right at all. surely these products are essential, and not too expensive. perhaps they could be supplied on the NHS to poorer families.

perhaps they could be supplied on the NHS to poorer families.
I think it should be free. Not the fancy stuff...but the basics.

You can go and get free condoms so why not sanitary wear? And razors should be on the list as well...
I think its disgraceful, as Ummm says you can get free condoms - the basic sanitary protection should also be free. Having to pay VAT on it as well is horrific its not a luxury item is it!
I maybe reading between the lines here but this looks more like a cultural thing rather than not being able to afford them.

Here their face book page.

Dave.
Is is terrible and what is also alarming is that some of the girls in that article didn't seem to know what was going on with their bodies.

Dave the school approached that group because of the girls absence - in the article one of the girls states
//"I didn't get any money because my mum was a single parent and she had five mouths to feed, so there wasn't much leftover money in the pot to be giving to us."//
how the hell is that cultural?
Have a look at their facebook page.
I agree plain 'no frills' pads or tampons should be provided.
Dreadful they will have to give up the fags and booze.
Doesn't matter what the facebook pages states the school called them in to help the girl has said why she was not attending.
helping teens in leeds how is that cultural..

Foodbanks will accept sanitary protection as well as tinned and dried foodstuffs.

Shocking, isn't it?
Education needed here for the whole family as I would suggest the family needs to be aware these are a necessity.
From the report:

"I didn't get any money because my mum was a single parent and she had five mouths to feed,…”

So she would have been receiving (among many other gifts and monies) £75.50 in Child Benefit each and every week. More than enough to provide for her daughter’s essential requirements.

It’s a matter of priorities, which I imagine are not too well considered in some quarters. Another load of baseless drivel.
ignorance isn't bliss in this case, poor girls, i know just how they feel,
Offering girls free sanitary towels thru doc or school would opportune girls to be taught birth control.
The girls are taught about menstruation at school. That's why I find it so sad that some of them don't seem to know what's going on.

What is going on?

I was fully prepared by my teachers, and my mum, for my first period.
tilly
i wasn't prepared and thought i was dying, it was terrifying.

these girls need to be educated as to what is happening.
Do you offer free STs when you teach girls tilly. I didnt tell my parents I was menstruating till my mother found my sodden flannel and asked me. I was toooooo shy to tell anyone from 11 to 14y
