Turkish Politics under this clown seems to be reaching a point of absurdity, and he wants even more power over his people to become the new sultan, will he get it? https://www.rt.com/news/382322-erdogan-turkey-eu-brexit-referendum/

He can't have a Brexit as such as Turkey is not a member of the EU.
I Like his style!
Applying the Groucho Marx rules it seems.
AB
what would that be, can't reference it..
he wants a referendum on whether to keep applying to join the EU. Just what many ABers have been protesting for years that Britain didn't have. So I expect he'll get support round here.
GM famously said that he'd never join any club that would accept him as a member.
I wouldn't join any club that wanted me as a member.
ah ha now i remember
will Turkey be able to join the EU at some point.
Who cares? It won't be our business anymore.
what JD said
"will Turkey be able to join the EU at some point."

They have been running an ascension bid for a few decades, and looked like they were on their way in the early 2000s. The "brexit" mentioned in the article would be a referendum on whether they should continue the ascension bid, or sack it off.

One of the things which held them back last time I paid attention was the death penalty.
do they have the death penalty in Turkey?

Capital punishment has been abolished in Turkey as of 2004, and Turkey has not executed any prisoners since October 1984.

are they looking to change that.........
Abolished unless you happen to be a Kurd.

The man is a *** lunatic.
well frankly anyone who wants to join the EUSSR must be radio so I'd say he'd done himself no harm at all!
Emmie, maybe my memory is a little wonky, but it mostly makes sense.
Why should capital punishment be an obstacle? France, a founder member, only abolished it as late as 1981. It did not seem to hamper them.
I would have thought economics were the main barrier ... I think politics will have moved up the table of reasons not to let them in now Erdogan wants to take Turkey backwards in time.

I think Cyprus might be a bit of an issue too.
