Usa Have Fired Missiles At Syria
Bluddy hell, that was quick.

Assad the Butcher has been committing war crimes on an unprecedente d scale for years. The world has just stood around muttering but not actually doing anything. I am far from being a Trump fan, but handsome is as handsome does as far I am concerned. I give my full support to this action.

"And if the Russians were warned do you think that information may have been shared making the strike just a tad futile? "
Not really. All reputable news channels were last night reporting that the US would very likely strike that airbase over night, so it would not have come exactly as a surprise. You might be able to move some stuff, but you can't actually move an airbase itself. Of course the US would have informed Russia: they communicate all the time because both countries have military there (the US is about to launch an attack on Raqqa with rebel forces for example). They don't want incidental or accidental casualties or clashes.

Khandro...keep sticking your head in the sand if you want but the evidence is overwhelming.
Assad has used Sarin gas on previous occasions and he has done it again. Sarin gas and other nerve agents can't be made in a rebel basement....they are highly sophisticated and extremely dangerous chemical compounds.

Apart from vetuste_ennemi, Khandro, and me, has anyone given a moment’s thought to the alternative?
A strange turn of events. Suddenly Trump is receiving praise from his usual critics, and criticism from those who have given him their support. Funny old world.

Douglas, indeed. What could possibly go wrong?

Although I'm a big fan of keeping our noses out of other people's countries, this was far more wide ranging and needed to be done. As Minty said the reason Assad thought he could get away with doing this is because he's done it before with no consequence. I for one do not want it to be acceptable in any shape or form to use chemical weapons ( and I know it's already illegal to do so but there seems to be a case pf amnaesia about it) so my only regret at the moment is that they didn't hit Assad harder and heavier. There is the issue of the massive unwanted power vacuum that his removal will create which historically doesn;t do well, but that's another bridge to cross in the future, today he had to be hit hard as a deterant against anyone using nerve agents anywhere.
What do you mean by alternatives Naomi? Both the Syrian government and the Russian government have committed to reducing Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons, and to abstain from using them. They've patently not held to their agreement.
Furthermore Russia is now talking about holding an emergency meeting at the UN - perhaps now they feel a bit less like obstructing absolutely everything that organisation tries to do about Syria.
