Assad the Butcher has been committing war crimes on an unprecedented scale for years. The world has just stood around muttering but not actually doing anything. I am far from being a Trump fan, but handsome is as handsome does as far I am concerned. I give my full support to this action.

Khandro at 08:50, me too. I said something similar yesterday.
Khandro....perhaps Itchy and myself, and all the others that support Trump on his attack on Assad the Butcher, think that committing a war crime by using chemical weapons isn't as acceptable as you seem to find it ?

If Obama had done the same in 2015, Assad may not have dropped the chemical weapons this week.
Mikey, don't insult people. I don't think anyone here condones the use of chemical weapons. How the situation is approached and the potential result of that approach is a different matter.
Not surprising at all really khandro if you think about it: support or otherwise for whoever is based on their words and actions. Trump, at least for now, has changed his words and actions. You and others have always agreed with people like Jeremy Corbyn and Nigel Farage that we should keep out of 'foreign conflicts'
The only surprise in all this is that Trump has changed - for now.
Corbyn never changes and neither do Stop the War, I see, who are obviously very selective in what wars they protest about.
Assad and Putin are still doing genocide
Just another normal day really
Do not adjust your set :-)
ichkeria - and Mikey (if he wants to think about it), what do you think the result of this will be - and what do you think the outcome will be if Assad loses the war in Syria?
Well said Itchy !

People like Khandro have no solutions to the problem of Assad thee Butcher.....he, and others, like Farage and Corbyn would rather just stand by and watch war crimes being committed from a safe distance.

Thank goodness the same argument didn't prevail in the former Yugoslavia, otherwise those other butchers, Milosevic and Karadžić would still be in power and still be committing genocide by murdering 10,000's of boys and men. The free world acted then and we should be doing the same to Assad.

I repeat....Trump has my full support here.
No answer to my question then, Mikey.
mikey //People like Khandro have no solutions to the problem of Assad thee Butcher..//

The "problem" isn't and never has been Assad, the problem has been Isis and various other malcontents who have wished to depose him backed by and financed by other countries.
You really should try to learn about the history of Syria before you sound off.
Assad controlled by a firm dictatorship, but that was essential to keep peace among the variety of different groups who were all protected by him; Sunnis, Shias, Alawites Druze, Christians and even some atheists and Jews. Damascus was beautiful city and each group had their own enclave with their own markets and places of worship.
The west's dream that somehow democracy can be imposed by force is complete nonsense, it is impossible and not even wanted.
Just kill off the bad guys and leave a harmonious democracy, that policy seems to work!
Tillerson says the US is 'working on' the removal of Assad. They're also investigating Russian complicity in the chemical attack. That airbase is also used by Russian special forces. It seems possible that the area was scoped by a Russian drone a day or so before.
Oh and as for proof it turns out the US released tracking data of the flights. I guess the Russians knew they would do that, which is why they could not deny that the raid had been carried out.
Unsure it is quite that straightforward Khandro. ISIS is a major problem because they want to take over a vast area and create a backwards oppressive religious state, and so went to the top of the list as far as problems in the area were concerned.

But that doesn't mean that Assad isn't a problem. He is in the list of leaders who are normally unacceptable due to what they do to the local people, but until one has an suitable alternative waiting in the wings, are deemed not worth deposing. We have plenty of examples showing that when one unsuitable leader goes they aren't necessarily replaced by a benevolent leader who has the support of all their people. It's a judgement call whether one works to getting rid of someone or leaving them in place and trying to limit the excesses. But he is still a problem.
Assad is the reason IS has a foothold in Syria in the first place. It was he who started the killing that provoked the war that's torn the country apart.
There is no military solution to this, but the removal of his appalling regime in a measured fashion if possible would be a major step
ichi //Assad is the reason IS has a foothold in Syria in the first place. It was he who started the killing that provoked the war that's torn the country apart. //
Absolute tosh, the main sources of terrorism in the region are political Islam and all its related religious groups. All these radical groups, including ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Jabhat Al-Nusra and Hamas have been spawned by a political Islam driven by the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Khandro......"The "problem" isn't and never has been Assad"

Really ?

No one, and certainly not me, are denying the awfulness of ISIS.

But Trump attacked the Syrian airbase because Assad used chemical weapons, which is a war crime. Assad has used them on a number of occasions in the last few years, all of illegally.

But I guess you are still in denial about this latest use, aren't you ?

OG has it right at 10:25 this morning. Some people are asking what next.....well, Assad the Butcher won't be using chemical weapons again, will he ?
Well, that's the question Mikey, will he ?
Anne....as long as Trump is prepared to bomb his air bases, then he would be a fool to do so, so I think its unlikely, at least in the immediate future.

But Assad the Butcher is a ruthless dictator, like his father before him, and we shall have to watch him like a hawk !
Although I admit that Assad is not exactly the most benevolent of men, what is worrying is that the illiberal Left hate him so much that they are prepared to seek his removal at any cost, without thought as to what may follow. It seems to be a case of, "Let's get rid of the devil we know and we'll worry about the devil we don't know later".
I give up
Lol ;-)
'Assad not the most benevolent of men' 'hated by the liberal left'
What more is there to say ...
If you are going to quote me at least get it right. I said 'illiberal Left'.
Sorry. So the 'liberal' left
are onside with old Basher or what :-)

I'm still gobsmacked at Khandro's impression that Assad is not the problem in Syria or that somehow a man who failed hopelessly to deal with a (non) Islamist revolution is somehow still the man to unite even a fraction of the broken country
