There are distinct rumours that Mrs May is thinking of ditching the triple lock on pensions, as well as ditching the 2015 Tory manifesto pledge not to raise income tax, national insurance or VAT.

So, we could be looking at a future Tory government, where the value of your pension will go down, at the same time as taxes go up.

Labour, in their current state, have no chance of winning an election hence why I asked you if you were voting.

It's a long way from the thread's original question, but if there is a groundswell change of opinion it isn't clear until all have voted according to their conscience and the votes have been counted. A wasted vote is one that would have won a seat for someone, but went elsewhere instead because the voter wasn't confident.

In the early 20th Century, Mikey, the embryo Labour Party had not long been formed. It was not until around 1920 that they overtook the Liberal Party and became the official Opposition. I imagine in that period many people thought "Voting for that lot of 'new kids on the block' is a complete waste". By your rationale voting for unestablished parties is a waste of time. I beg to differ.

That's only your belief Mikey. Labour may never win another election. It's highly likely. I'm sorry if I appear tiresome. I'm just trying to point out that people vote ukip for exactly the same reason you vote labour. They haven't lost hope, however futile it might be.

NJ....but UKIP's whole raison d'etre is to withdraw from the EU, and we have now started that process. UKIP has no other purpose in life.

I have no doubt, that despite what happens in June, that process will still continue. That is my point in a vote for UKIP being seen as wasted.

Talking of slim majorities, can anyone remember Sir Harmar Nicholls (father of Sue Nicholls, Corrie) ex MP for Peterborough, who survived on double digit, and sometimes single digit majorities.He lasted until October '74 when he lost his seat. In 1966 his majority was 3!

Interesting to read a foreword to the 1974 Labour Party manifesto by H Wilson which contained the following:
'The British people were never consulted about the Market. Even more, the country was deceived in 1970 about the Government's intentions on jobs and prices. They will not be deceived again.'

I am old enough to remember 1979, when people wrote off the Labour Party, as you are trying to do now. And yet a few years later in 1997, Labour came back with the largest landslide victory since their last biggest landslide victory in 1945.

The size of that 1997 landslide was even more than in the Tory win of 1979.

Similar things were being said about the Tories in 1997, when they only managed to get 165 seats, against Labours 418.

But they bounced back, even though it took them 3 elections to do so.

I'm pretty sure that the labour stalwarts of 1945 would not have recognized the party that won in may 1997 as being of labour origin, so far to the right had it been modeled by Tony Blair......

mikey, you are just being stubborn; there is no such thing as a "wasted" vote, all votes have equal validity. In the last general election 4 million British people voted UKIP, the fact that it achieved so little in MPs is not the fault of the voters but of our first past the post system (of which btw I agree). 4 million is an awful lot of votes and it sent out a clear message to the government, arguably leading to the referendum, so not one of them was wasted.

Actually the Tory majority in 1979 was a modest 43. It wasn't till 1983 that the Lady bumped it up by another 100.
