Khan told Channel 4 News: "I don’t think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances, where his policies go against everything we stand for."

Khan has been against this 'state' visit since it was first announced. I watch C4 news regularly and on last night's programme, the Mayor of London was asked to comment on Trump's pathetic tweets. Khan refused but, when asked if the 'state' visit should go ahead, he gave the reply as stated in the OP. As Naomi suggests, Khan is not against the Trump visit per se, but believes there should be less pomp and ceremony accompanying it.

If the State visit goes ahead it will be interesting to see if Khan joins in the pomp and vanity.

Also it is in order for Khan to criticise Trump but not the other way round.

I think we just have to grimace and bear him. I feel sorry for the decent people of the US who are so ashamed of their president. But our "special relationship" with the US will survive the Trump interregnum.
