To be honest all, I can hardly be bothered for now. I spent 16 hours yesterday in a polling station doing the clerking and am crunched. But one thing for sure, I could have told you by 12noon that something big was happening. We are of course not allowed to communicate when on duty, but it was striking how many young first time voters were turning up. It was obvious...

I'm sure she'll be able to offer a strong and stable resignation speech.

Now,now mikey, that is bordering on sexism.
//I'm sure she'll be able to offer a strong and stable resignation speech//

Then change her mind. :))
aog, //The woman is a disgrace both to the Tories but also to her country //

That's a bit harsh. I don't think she's a disgrace. I think her fault lies in her naivety. She assumed the British electorate were more savvy than they are.

"I'm sorry you're all too stupid to see how brilliant I am." -- Theresa May's apology for this result.

She has only herself to blame for this result. I don't see how you can continue to insist on any other explanation. She took the British public for granted, and they gave her what for.

Jim, I agree that she took the British public's common sense for granted. Bad move!

Well, it's nice to see that you respect the British electorate's stupid decision.

Boot's on the other foot, eh?
Yeah , perhaps we should have elections without the british public taking part .
No common sense , those pesky british public
Jim, I haven't said I don't respect it - I do - and I accept the result so I won't be whinging on, like some have over the referendum result, about how unfair it is forever more. Just saying where I think Mrs May went wrong.
It was obvious that although being old enough to vote for 4 or 5 years many had never set foot in a polling station and required "help" with the process. We were of course under strict guidelines as to what can and cannot be conveyed, but I have never had someone wanting to show me their ballot slip asking is this alright. What a panic that caused at the desk. Nooooo don't show us in unison, and all of us in our feet with a hand, palm forward, out. Going to go for a walk to clear my head. Home alone for the weekend. "She who must be obeyed" has gone to Amsterdam till Monday.

I never said that you don't respect it, but it's obvious that you've gone for completely the wrong reasons for this result.

Theresa May had a strong position, and she blew it through her own incompetence and her own mistakes. To blame her, instead, only for overestimating the "common sense" of the British Public is the height of contempt for the electorate.
Jim you were the one who mentioned 'respect'. I responded to that. You have your opinions about why she didn't do as well as she wanted to - and I have mine - and if it's all the same to you, from what I've seen on here and elsewhere over the past several weeks, I'll stick to mine.
Just another point, I feel that there was a campaign run through the colleges and universities to press the youngsters to register and vote, with the "appropriate" advice on who to vote for. They arrived in clusters and had obviously travelled or arranged to turn up together. Now the question is, when we get the inevitable October re-run will they be bothered to do it again. Cold rainy day in the dark? I somehow doubt it.
Thanks for the post, Jim...and Murdo for your company and speedy updates...

What an interesting night.......I was surprised and pleased at how well Labour did and how Corbyn came across.....I wonder if Diane Abbott cost the party votes...

Two things pleased me.......that people are seeing sense and not letting the Conservatives walk all over them and now the Conservatives know this....
And that so many young folk voted.....maybe this is something good that will come out of this election and they'll continue to take an interest and use their vote at every election....

I'm sorry that Theresa May is still in charge and could join up with the DUP......how depressing that would be.....
Even more depressing than having Leo Varadkar in charge of Ireland..... :(

You're welcome! I'm grateful to Murdo for providing the running seat results through the night, especially when my laptop was temporarily out of service!

What an excellent thread this is. Well done everyone.
So let me get this right Naomi, the public were naive and stupid on this occasion because Saint Teresa credited them with having more sense than they had but on the Brexit referendum they were savvy and marvellous? You couldn't make such hypocrisy up :)
badges all round !

Best Answer to Togo for his report from the front lines, as it were.
Thank you Jim. I will cherish BA on a thread that generated 500+ replies. Still goosed, but a Pint out in the sunshine has revived my "spirits" if not my heavy legs and heart.
