Why on earth shouldn't these boys school allow them to wear shorts in this very hot weather.

When I was younger, most boys of this age still wore shorts, so why is the Head teacher, being so ruddy obdurate ?

Such larks.

Suck larks indeed, but we get something similar to this every summer. Daft unnecessary school rules IMHO.

AOG....to paraphrase Lewis Carroll......dafter and dafter !

uniform policy, schmolicy.
Surely the health of school children is more important.

Wonder what the teachers wore?
the lad second from the left will probably get double detention for not wearing a tie
We used to have to ask for permission to remove our blazers. It was always granted. Most boys until 13 wore short pants. It was a rite of passage to go into long trousers.

I remember the long sock very well AOG !

They made the legs very itchy in the warmer months, although they were a blessing during the winter.

I am not sure I had a pair of longs much before I was 12. All the family photos of myself and my brothers showed a complete lack of longs.

This school has some pretty daft and petty rules. Apparently, the lads can have their shirts un-tucked-in, in the classrooms, but must tuck them back in when they leave for the next classroom.

This reminds me of that wonderful sketch on the Monty Python film. ::::

Wonderful !

That was because you were a scruffy urchin and like all scruffy urchins your socks were most likely rolled down in an untidy heap over the top of your shoes, you did have shoes didn't you mikey? :0)

Yes AOG....a pair of those ones with animal tracks on the soles, and a secret compass in the heel !

But we always wore leather sandals in the summer....never see boys wearing them now though.
Yet another story where parents think they know best and are installing into their kids they are always right.

Rules are rules, its a couple of days in this country so they need to just get on with. I doubt very much the teachers were wearing shorts, probably why they are not in the photo anywhere.

And on the subject of shorts I wonder how many of these boys would want to wear a 'uniform' pair, they are probably thinking more of football shorts which is not acceptable.

I had to wear my blazer and full uniform all the time as it was a private school, and I was at school in 1976 which has similar temperatures.

Had a pair of shoes with a compass in them too, I'd forgotten them Mickey.
Bully for them. Did they go out and spend a fortune on skirts ? Well they should last quite a few summers then.

I can't see what is wrong with a "uniform" version of shorts ?

We used to wear grey "school shorts" that weren't the same as we wore for rugger or football. We also had a pair of "playing" shorts, so as not to ruin our good shorts for school.

Its a very simple thing that these boys are asking for and they get my support.
By the time the Head and Governors have decided on a uniform pair of shorts it will be minus 6 degrees again.

No secondary schools I know of allow shorts.
I hope they are slapping the suncream on their lily white legs.
When I was at school we were not allowed to wear 'Long Trousers' until we got to secondary school at age 12. Until then shorts were compulsory even in a freezing winter !
I wonder how many workman in trousers and hi viz clothing on top, the children passed when they went home.
Itchy socks and an even itchier balaclava... Those were the days :-)
