Islay seems to think that you cannot be a hero if you are in a job where you know the risks, which would preclude any member of the armed forces from receiving a medal for bravery.

Just seen him on the News. We do need more like him - and he deserves a medal!
A very brave man.

Every year, there are debates about the honours system.

But this chap is exactly the sort that should get a medal...lets hope he does.
I'd second the call for a medal. Do we know what lasting effect this could have on him. Is he fit to work again? Very brave man indeed.
Question Author
BB....judging from the interview I heard today on the PM Program, he is making a slow but steady recovery.

He said that he wants to get back to his old job asap.....lets hope he does.
if only he had a taser as well as his baton
The trouble with the honour system is that it's been devalued over the years with titles/medals passed out to apparently anyone doing their job. Different to differentiate between those they are awarded to. (Although some may claim it was always open to abuse and awarded to those in favour anyway.) It probably needs replacing with something with sterner criteria or scrapped altogether.

Full marks for this guy though. Wish I could claim such ability, and so glad never to have been put to the test.

OG....the honours system is here to stay I'm afraid....it is embedded deep withing our society, and I can't see anything changing any time soon.

I was thinking perhaps, about the George Cross for this chap, although I am unsure if it would be appropriate.
He is a hero.
You see police officers like him on tv shows like Happy Valley etc. who put their lives on the line, but you don't often realise there are real people like that.
Is he a hero for doing his job?
Brave yes, hero, not so sure!
Islay, what he did was over and above his job.
Sorry Danny I disagree when they sign up to serve they know there is a risk.
As I said yes he is brave, a hero I don't agree.
He is a true hero..
Most people, my self included, would disagree with you.

He did far more than his Job asked of him, he is a Hero!
Danny that is OK I do not have an issue with you disagreeing with me, just as I disagree with you!
but for this brave man's heroic actions.....?
Islay, can you honestly say that this man does not fit the definitioon of a hero?

Question Author
Islay....he took on three attackers single-handed, at huge risk to himself. If this chap isn't a hero, then I don't know who is.
Danny,

I will repeat what I have said before, whilst I consider him brave I do not consider him a hero.
I know that this is different to what everyone else’s thoughts will be but that is my personal thoughts.
