I've been avoiding this for weeks but we still seem to be nowhere near any sort of solution to this so any ideas how we can make it work?

It'll work fine as it has done previously as long as authorities keep an eye on it to prevent abuse. Anyway it's a UK Irish border, EU not really directly involved save where they wish to put their nose in and meddle with national agreements.
Cant we just have passport checks into the UK Mainland and allow an 'open' border within Ireland? An open border meaning the Irish just show their passports in the fast track with the British everyone else goes through passport control. Same in the reverse.
Change the rules so no 'foreigners' have any rights in the UK (No council houses or benefits) and will be detained until we find their country of origin. If that is the EU then lob back over the border to Ireland.
It cant be difficult providing no one tried to make it political. Personally I dont want to loose our close ties with the Irish so we need to find something then just tell the EU what it is.

It is impossible to have any sort of "proper" border in Ireland.
It is hundreds of miles long and in places actually goes through people's houses. There is one enclave of either County Monaghan or Cavan which is almost completely cut off by the North.
The idea of an "EU border" seems so ridiculous to many of the residents along it that they've actually had to be reminded that someone might just be tempted to try it, with all the consequences that might bring.
