Another shooting in London. It seems to me that hardly a day goes by without there being a shooting or a stabbing in a part of London. What can be done about this, is there nothing the Mayor can do? Stronger sentences for when they are caught perhaps?

It's a vast metropolis with a population in the millions, even an average or low crime rate (which it doesn't have, it's high)would generate regular headlines over time.

What the mayor (or anyone in government) can do depends on what you think causes it. A deterrent sentence is only a good solution if the people doing this think they'll be caught. Which they might,of course, but I find that unlikely. If they don't think they'll be caught, deterrents cannot work.

I personally would lean more towards giving people opportunities they don't currently have (i.e. carrots as well as sticks) to draw them away from crime. It'll never happen though because people think that's too wooly and soft and doesn't look good enough. Also it requires committing resources and long-term planning, which nobody likes.
Why must the perpetrators be described? The ChSupt in charge of the case isn't described.
Thank God a BBC link was added ... had no clue what this was about from the OP
generations of right on lefty thinking coupled with a plod "force" who are more interested in having a gay/black/transgender - etc - association than they are in nicking villains has ensured that cities are largely lawless horrible places.

/// Now, over to the usual suspects to add nothing but their usual comments. ///

Speaking on behalf of the 'usual suspects', ie one who dares to speak the truth, these days, no matter how uncomfortable it may be for the apologists.

The first measure that needs bringing in, would be for drastic stop and search action, no matter how much the 'local community' moans about being picked on, and even if the 'local community' are in the majority non-white then so be it.
TTT has arrived, the voice of reason . LOL
'cities are largely lawless horrible places'

Not in my experience. I visit London quite often and have never witnessed a single crime (unless you count paying £15 for a cocktail a crime). I visit many other cities and often work in Leeds and have never seen any crime other than 'handbags at dawn' fisticuffs.

Why do you have to exaggerate so much. You sound Radio.

/// Agreed. The news section should be retitled 'Uneducated, Predjudice Viewpoints'. ///

Don't put yourself down so much Zacs.

But feel free, if the news section is not to your satisfaction, why not ask the Ed if she would consider introducing a category called: 'Uneducated, Predjudice Viewpoints'?

You could then post to your hearts content.
Nice one AOG - that's answering the question in hand. The good thing about what you've written is that we can now attack/support/oppose what you've written, because it's directly relevant to the question.

Re: stop and search...it would be interesting to understand exactly how much support this would actually get. In my own experience, older members of urban communities are broadly in favour, but their voices tend to drowned out by those who oppose the measures.

But isn't stop and search is a bit of a cop out?

It's the very end of the criminal process. At the point that someone is stopped and searched and found to be armed, they have relinquished the responsibility of being an upstanding citizen. The seeds would've been planted way before that. Would it not make more sense to go for a holistic approach where the roots of the downward spiral are tackled?
You sound like a bit of an expert in the subject AOG.
AOG

"Speaking on behalf of the 'usual suspects', ie one who dares to speak the truth, these days"

Once again - opinion, not truth.

You really need to start separating those out. If you continue to claim that what you say is the truth, others may inadvertently arrive at the conclusion that you're being very arrogant.
ZM are you are happy with all these shootings and stabbings etc or do you not believe the reports?

I must warn you in the very strongest terms...what you're getting into with AOG is what's known as an AB rabbit hole.

In a couple of hours time, you'll be wondering where the hell you are, and you will only have Alice and a massive caterpillar for company.

Run sir...run.
Stop and search won't work for the very reason AOG describes (the s&s of more black people than white). It's been tried and tested and it simply results in cries of "predjudice" and "discrimination" with costly court cases and wasting of police time.
sp, I'm well versed in the Through the Looking glass arguments of AOG. It is quite fun to see his Mad Hatteresque responses tho.

Throw all the money, education and opportunities at them that you care to, you will still not alter their in bred life style of drugs, violent crime, knives and guns.

// the mayor has no power over the justice system.//

unlike Utah where the mayor rang and apologised to nurse Wubbel after she was manhandled for refusing to draw blood from an unconscious patient - - - - - -- [just saying]

the killers of boy blue in the 'pule didnt exactly get probation did they
and as someone has said even on AB
no one points a gun at someone and then think - oo I might do life if I pull the trigger - er- um I had better not

[ the theme of this post is that thread of punishment may be no deterrent]
stronger sentencing won't do it, they don't care if they are caught, its a badge of honour to some to go to prison.. you have to get into the schools early enough, to teach them how dangerous gangs are, and that joining one may lead to them being seriously hurt, or worse.
Not joining one sometimes leads to being seriously hurt.
