At a complete loss about the so-called 'fury'. A staunch Catholic says he's against abortion and people are shocked? What next, Pope is a Catholic shock? Ridiculous, manufactured, insulting to Catholics. Tomorrow's front page: "Man found in bed with his wife"?

Sory, Tora. Was in hospital.
Ignore TGT......he's certainly not above recycling his own (and others) threads when the fancy takes him....

I have a bit of a soft spot for JRM.
Whilst I understand that he believes what his faith tells him, I believe he is completely and utterly wrong but it would have been more news-worthy that as a Catholic he had stated that he was in favour of abortion.
Yes, I love it when they ask Muslim politicians similar questions.
JRM is a Muslim.....?!?

Well, stap me vitals!!
scooping - It's not that Mr Rees-Mogg is against abortion - he shares that view with most adherents of his faith - it's that he has declared that he believes abortion to be wrong regardless of the circumstances of conception, such as rape.

That is what the outcry is about.
the thing is, it's an "incorrect" correct view only muslims are allowed to have those.
// It's not that Mr Rees-Mogg is against abortion - he shares that view with most adherents of his faith - it's that he has declared that he believes abortion to be wrong regardless of the circumstances of conception, such as rape. //

Surely that's what all catholics believe though? - or should believe at any rate. Isn't that their official position? - genuine question.
ignore "correct"
I'll go the whole hog and ignore all of it seeing as it's an obvious attempt to shepherd the thread up a 'muslims-are-worse' cul-de-sac...
Yes and I'm afraid that once again religion imparts the most ridiculous of dogmas upon its adherents. To suggest that a woman should carry and give birth to a child which was conceived as a result of such an abominable violation of her body just makes me wonder quite how someone of Mr Rees-Mogg's undoubted intelligence can be sucked into such a ludicrous creed.
^ yep

wonder if Mr R-M would hold the same values if, forbid, a relative of his was ever in that position
For the benefit of New Judge, as I said on the other thread ...

It is amusing that Jacob Rees-Mogg is prepared to let the Catholic Church intervene in his life, his morals and his thinking to such an extent, when he is so well-known for resenting the interference of other institutions ...
As much as I don't share most of Jacob's viewpoint, I do share your puzzlement Scooping at the fuss that a staunch Catholic holds the views he does.

Of course in the game of interviewing he was never going to be asked 'Do you live in the real World - how much is a pint of milk?' as other politicians have.
In a collection of misfits, weirdos, throwbacks and oddballs, the Conservative party, Jacob stands head and shoulders above most.
Ludwig - //Surely that's what all catholics believe though? - or should believe at any rate. Isn't that their official position? - genuine question. //

Like all religions, and their followers, the rules are, shall we say, 'open to interpretation'.

This means that a Catholic may put money in the Pro-Life collection on Sunday, and then have sexual relations on Sunday night using birth control because he or she does not wish to have a child.

All followers of all religion do this - from the Muslim who shaves his beard, to the fanatic who kills Westerners because they are not Muslims.

Religious doctrine makes no allowance for human nature, but in the real world, almost everyone does, to some degree.
I'm not the slightest bit religious, but I find myself agreeing with Mr Rees Might.
Bleeding autocorrect.
Rees-Mogg.
Ludwig - //Surely that's what all catholics believe though? - or should believe at any rate. Isn't that their official position? - genuine question. //

Yes, it is their official position.
I have to agree with others who have expressed surprise that he is in agreement with fundamental dogma of the religion of which he is a practising adherent.

Similarly, while I personally find the three Abrahamic religions abhorrent, I have to acknowledge at least that he is following his faith "correctly" and not just picking and choosing the bits which suit him.

If you support abortion for any reason, you can't be a Catholic.
