/// Studies show that suspicion of police, prosecutors and solicitors makes ethnic-minority defendants a third more likely to plead not guilty than white suspects, leading to harsher sentences if they are convicted. ///

I can't see how the number of any subset of people in jail makes a genetic argument? also am I alone if finding the term "ethnics" unpleasant and insulting?

/// If the statistics showed that people with blue eyes committed far more crimes than any others, wouldn't you expect more people with blue eyes to be stopped and searched than any others? ///

Only if those blue eyed persons were know for handling drugs, carrying knives and guns, in a predominately blue eyed, high crime area.

No one has clarified anything, what I wish to see if definite proof, not just supposition by certain over sensitive groups.
The likes of me are out of this thread for any meaningful debate. The likes of me can hardly draw breath in the face of such bigoted stupidity.
According to a study carried out (which i cannot find at the moment) out of 300 black and 300 white female defendents up infront of the judge for drug crimes - 100 white women were jailed but 220 black women were jailed!
How can that be fair?
Woof, no you aren't alone.

Re the OP, not having studied the topic in depth but based on the many reports over the years I believe there to be an inequality in many areas of treatment within the justice system.

I think this is the report you are referring to;

/// For every 100 white women handed custodial sentences at crown courts for drug offences, 227 black women were given prison terms. ///

/// For black men, the figure was not as marked but still considerably higher, with 141 black men jailed for every 100 white men. ///

Don't you think that it may all depend on their past records?

And the reason that more females are sent to Jail is because they are more likely to be used as Drug Mules?
What were the odds of David Lammy, of all people, conducting an enquiry into racial bias in the justice system and finding none?

/// Re the OP, not having studied the topic in depth but based on the many reports over the years ///

What reports are those then?

If there have been that many official reports over many years why has nothing been done, or are they just based on supposition from those with a certain agenda axe to grind?

Incidentally Mr Lammy's final recommendations from the review are due to be presented to ministers next spring.

So perhaps we should wait until then to see what truth has emerged and what action will then be taken?

There is the fact that if you plead not guilty and are then found guilty anyway you lose the automatic 1/3rd off your sentence for an early guilty plea.
Anyone no matter what the ethnicity is going to do more 'time' if they try to get away with a not guilty plea when they actually are guilty.

Yes perish the thought, he may be accused of being bias towards white people?

What then, yet another enquiry?
Nope thats not the study because no men were mentioned and it was 220 women
Various, choose one or a few - as I say I can't speak from personal experience on this topic.
The only criminal I know at the moment is not Black,Asian or a minority of any description.

Nor have I studied the topic in full like yourself.

Yeah, but apart from that there's no evidence Mamya! ;-)

Pardon me for trying, but you did not mention men and I thought you may have rounded off the actually female figure, but hey! that's 7 more towards your case.

But don't bother thanking me.
AOG. He found racial bias in the Vatican smoke. ;-)
He is the epitome of a race baiting buffoon.

You're awesome.

I mean that seriously.

People may criticise you for posting these questions, but I for one celebrate them.

Really, really seriously.
But in answer to your question, previous studies have found that within the justice system, BAME first time offenders are far more likely to get custodial sentences than their white counterparts (for similar offences).

I don't think this is indicative of the justice system, but more a reflection of how people of different ethnic c groups are perceived.
This is what I mean by perception...

It would have been better for somebody to have been involved rather than David Lammy because is a *** - he's the latter day Bernie Grant.
