British Response To The Hurricanes

I have just heard Boris waffle on to John Humphrys about how well he and the FO have responded to the hurricanes in the British Virgin Islands. But all the reports I have heard of, mostly this morning, tell a very different story.

What could they have done in the middle of a hurricane? They need to at least know what the damage is.

Other nations, like the French and Dutch seem to have managed a lot better than us.

We're all too often too quick to criticise. Maybe the government is making a proportionate response and doing the best it can. People will always moan when they've been hit by a natural disaster and that's natural.

Jo....he waffled, Boris-style and denied that the FO has dragged its feet, despite reports to the contrary. There is a RN boat on its way, but it won't get there for another 2 weeks !

Ummm...we are not dealing with an earthquake here...this hurricane had been predicted for many days .

so, according to some, the Government should have put lives in danger in order to get aid there quicker?

Assess the damage first surely?

It does take a while for ships to get to their destination.

Aid will come from many countries - it is not the sole responsibility of the UK.

Additionally, how can one calculate the overall cost of the damage until after the devastation has been assessed?

Mikey - they'll need food and water and if that had brought in before the hurricane what do you think would have happened to it?

One of the main problems here is that despite this being
a well known hurricane area, almost all the buildings appear to have the weather resistance properties of a B+Q garden shed. And I fully expect them to be rebuilt in exactly the same way over the next few months. Will they never learn ?

Mikey, as has been said on another thread, the buildings are constructed cheaply there so that when they're blown down it's less of a loss and cheap to rebuild.

The Royal navy arrived two days ago. The airports had to be cleared before the planes could land and the French had troops stationed there.
