There must be tens of thousands claiming benefits who use the excuse of not being able to speak English, so stop unemployment benefits after 2 years if they still can't read, write and speak English.

No one really integrates do they ? Everyone goes to where their contempories are. May I remind everyone that during the days of the Raj the Brits all flocked together in India, No one would have dreamt of living with the natives. Integration just does NOT work & the sooner the authorities realise this the better for all concerned.

If you're ruling the place then you see no need to mix with the hoi polloi. If you are there to be part of the normal population then that's a somewhat different matter. One can understand feeling more at ease with your felloe ex-pats (or whomever) but the effort should be made to find a balance. It doesn't have to be 24/7.

I agree Ron, but right or wrong, there would be no reason too, or want too, as the natives had little education, and you wouldn't want to live with people who had no idea about health cleanliness, food hygiene etc.

why should people integrate if they don't want to? I agree they should comply with the law including human rights and so on but surely its everyone's choice how they live?

There are a number of different issues here. People living in another country will often seek out members of their own nationality socialy etc. and that's their choice. However when it comes to having to interact with the wider community they will be expected to communicate in that language or bear the expense of an interpreter. We lived in Germany in a military community but in the local shops, banks etc I man The majority of British expats are either working or are retired, not being a burden on the community. If someone wants to live here then after two years there should be no entitlement to interpreters at public expense for dealings with officialdom.

Well for what it's worth, here's my input. I bought a few items this afternoon from an ironmongers/general store owned and staffed by Asians and the £10 I spent would have cost me 20 or more in a shop owned by Brits.

Pakistani women are, I assume, almost all muslims. If they do not have the benefit of speaking English and understanding British culture, they are probably forced to believe that they are ruled solely by Sharia law, and that there is no other law which would treat them differently. Sharia law does not give women the rights which English law gives them, so ignorance of British culture keeps them subjugated to religious ( i.e. male ) edicts.

From what i have observed , it is my belief that some pakistani women have no choice in how they live their day to day lives , or where they live ; being dictated to by thier men folk .

As to integration - even if there is a will to - it is the case that they in a lot of cases suffer ' stiff resistance ' to live anywhere amongst the indigenous population .

There are a lot of people ( some on here , i get the feeling ) who would not like to have Mr & Mrs Wazir moving in next door

It's comparable to getting permission to move into someone's house, doing so, and then hiding away refusing to have anything to do with them. Just not on. Blooming rude. Hostile even.

Besides even if outside their comfort zone, making the effort will help them grow.

it has come up a bit - the NHS had translation services to ease integration and this was used to prevent the girls from learning English - and so increased social isolation
so now there is a strong pressure to learn English

we have also had some mention of muslim girls who are in the house from close of school in late July to opening of the new year in September when they are let out again

I'm afraid that some will never allow criticism of their favourite religion. A shame really as that means an awful lot of Uk citizens (Muslim women) are being effectively abused.

It's usually not a lifestyle they wish, the menfolk tell the woman how to live their lives. Lots of women who have been in this country for decades are not allowed to speak English. How can they integrate?
