Pity so many ABers fail to appreciate facts.

Lewis Hamilton was born in the UK but has Not done anything to benefit the country of his birth. His latest achievement was to win the FI championship title for Mercedes which suggests that he has been given an accolade on behalf a German Motor Manufacturer.

I wouldn't disagree with that .

My points made are with respect to Khandro's opinion that -
''Knighthoods should be for individual achievements not team efforts.''
Bazile - perhaps the difference is the help involved during the event itself. Racing drivers, some cyclists (Tour de France etc) have outside help. Athletes are on their own during the event. Tennis players may be coached during a match, so I'm not sure where I'd put them.
I agree with davegosling about coming first, I remember Nicki Lauda winning the F1 championship without winning a single race.
Khandro, that's not correct. Lauda won at least 3 races in each of his championship years. The closest I know of is 1982 when Keke Rosberg was champion but only won 1 race.
and din't Caroline Wozniacki become No1 ladies tennis player without winning a slam?
Even if he won 100% of his races, it means he is good at his job. It doesn't benefit anyone particularly. Why would he, or anyone, need extra acknowledgment?
No one 'needs' acknowledgement .

However , when i cut the lawn , her indoors pats me on the head , in acknowledgement of my efforts .
When Hamilton wins the Championship he gets a cup and the opportunity to make sponsership deals.
angie, I stand corrected, Rosberg with only one win in '82 and Lauda won it in '84 without ever starting from the front row.
Khandro, I see Mike Hawthorn also only won 1 race when winning the title in 1958.
Question Author
I think that people who enhance pride for our country should be honoured. This is why great politicians, authors, sportspeople, servicemen/women, actors, scientists, designer etc deserve to be honoured.

It's a recognition that they make us prouder to be British.
I think the honey badger deserves some kind of recognition for the way he's managed to stay positive and smiling in the face of unbelievable failures in backup and preparation.

Genuinely nice guy.
when he retires....why is there this want to knight sportsfolk when they pull off major feats - surely the honour of the win is enough to live on emotionally for a wee while?
If bouncing a $50k steering wheel off the bonnet during a tantrum is considered a requirement then yes.
They don't make me proud to be British... I would be more impressed by someone doing something useful anyway. He has earned enough money and fame (recognition) already. Isn't that enough?
