A lot of it is to do with the idiots who slavishly follow the use by and sell by dates and throw the food away on the stroke of midnight of that date instead of using common sense by looking and smelling it, that will tell you if it's ok to eat or not. We hardly throw any food away in our house. Don't know how on earth my grandma went on and how she lived to such a ripe old age without the nanny state telling her when to bin food.

You should take notice of Use By dates, it's Best Before that you can ignore.

I do use multi buy offers to save on shopping but only on things I can either use in date or freeze, like milk,butter,bread etc.

Baz, because the pickers don't go to the back of the shelf like you might do if shopping in store to look for the longest date.

You can always reject any short dated items at point of delivery.

I think you have answered your own question dave, use by, sell by, best before and morons who think they are in anyway relevant. I buy steak from ASDA on the last day for nothing pence and keep it a week after that before eating, orgasmatron!

oh yes anne I cook it! Meat is carion, by definition, rotting flesh, too fresh it's like eating a squash ball. It needs time to "rot" enough to make it edible. Come shopping with me one day anne and I guarantee an improvement in your carion eating experience.

I don't think it's been mentioned, is it possible that food is just too cheap. In my parents day we couldn't afford to waste any food, and my father had a well paid job.

I ignore both use by and sell by dates and just go with, if it looks and smells ok and isn't slimy then it's good to go.

Sam, I don't know about 'too cheap' these days, but do remember the Sunday roast of lamb/beef which mum then mince on the monday to make a shepherd's/cottage pie.

I'm thinking that some ab'ers parents came through the war and are of the 'mend it and fix it' (which I know isn't the correct terminology) and somewhere along the line parents have not been able to teach their children about cooking/shopping properly.

Sell by dates i agree can be ignored - they are just for stock rotation .

However you shouldn't just 'ignore' use by dates and rely soley on smell and sight .

Baz, i've been applying that principle for years now and rarely get stomach upsets (from food anyway) I won't be changing and food doesn't tend to hang round long, it either gets eaten or frozen.
