What's Causing Britain's Food Waste?

A lot of it is to do with the idiots who slavishly follow the use by and sell by dates and throw the food away on the stroke of midnight of that date instead of using common sense by looking and smelling it, that will tell you if it's ok to eat or not. We hardly throw any food away in our house. Don't know how on earth my grandma went on and how she lived to such a ripe old age without the nanny state telling her when to bin food.

Like Mamya I use my freezer carefully. We have very little waste food. Our brown wheelie-bin (emptied fortnightly) rarely contains more than 2 small biodegradable bags plus garden waste and a few bits of mouldy bready. I do buy bigger packs of meat etc., but I will cook it all in one batch (e.g. Bolognese sauce) and portion and freeze the result - handy for quick meals and economical. Left-over veg. nearly always end up in soups.
I do know people who empty their fridges etc. on Sat. morning (with no regard for any dates) and then go shopping to refill them. They are inevitably young-ish and busy. I wouldn't do on-line shopping unless forced, because I've seen the way supermarket staff hurl fruit into baskets and grab the nearest pack of meat or whatever.

Life used to be so simple back in the day. Go into the shop exchange a few pleasantries with the shopkeeper. Ask for what you wanted and he would put the items into a paper bag and that would be that. The butcher would advise on the best buy of that day . One basket or shopping bag would hold the lot and home you'd go.This was a daily event because not many had fridges let alone freezers then. No supermarkets in our area either. But those were the days when most women stayed home and the men went out to work. Nowadays with a lot of women working it is a frantic drive to the supermarket and then just count the number of operations needed to buy the weekly shop. Goods are taken off the shelves and put into the trolley;out of the trolley onto the conveyer belt; back into the shopping bags;out of the trolley and into the car . Not finished yet because everything has to be taken out of the car and into the house and then put away into the cupboards. If you're lucky the cashier will speak to you but only the obligatory--''do you need help with your packing'' and ''have a nice day''
Years ago there were no fancy wrappers to entice us to buy extra things. Today we are inundated with buy one get one free, 3 for two and cash discount if you spend a certain amount. No wonder people are buying too much.
No waste food years ago. Dogs and cats ate scraps ,rabbits ate all the spare vegetables and the local farmers took all the food waste from the local school and hospitals as pig waste. I don't know who put a stop to that but it was one of the biggest mistakes ever made with regards to waste food. Mind you we don't throw any food away. We have a garden so full of birds it's like an Alfred Hitchcocks film . They take care of any waste that we might have .
