Trump plainly now trying to dissociate himself from Moore. If this had happened in California, say, then the ‘narrow margin’ point night be worth something. But somewhere like Alabama these days any Democrat win is of note.
People seem to forget that it was not so long ago that the Deep South was solid Democrat territory, who were ultra-conservative and well to the right of the Republicans. Anyone remember governor George Wallace of Georgia?
Long enough ago that it matters that the Democrat won.
Trump was handed a duff hand in this election and wasn't able to win with it. That's not really a surprise. The real tests remain the midterms and 2020.
He is and that is why Mickeys posts are wrong. This was nothing to do with Trump really apart from the fact I suspect he may have got even less votes had DT not backed him (that he had much choice other than back the Republican candidate).
/// A little over 12 months ago, Trump won Alabama with a vote of 62.1%, against Clinton's 34.4%. What do you think has happened in the intervening 12 months ? ///
Nothing they just didn't care for Clinton just like they now don't care for Moore.
I welcome a Democrat victory that now means the Republican majority in the Senate is just 51-49.
But the candidate has refused to concede defeat even though with over 99% of votes counted he is more than 1.7 % down. That is exactly how Trump would behave in the same situation.
Roy Moore however , is a very flawed candidate , believing that homosexuality should be a criminal offence and haveing several allegations of sexual harassment against teenage girls against him.
He has also been expelled from the Alabama Supreme Court twice.
All in all he is a parody of Trump.
The main implication of his unexpected victory is that it massively increases the chances of the Democrats gaining control of the Senate in the 2018 mid term elections. Remember the Democrats also defeated a long standing Republican in Virginia last month.
Roy Moore is also 'Trump like' in his attitude to Muslims. He says should be banned from serving in any official office.
More of his views include that the 9/11 attack was a sign of God's anger and was predicted in the bible.
That Darwin was wrong and that there is no such thing as evolution.
That the only law comes from God
That Putin'' is more akin to me than I know''
^ Remind you of anyone?
ichi; Like I said earlier, Alabama was Democrat for 136 years and that was how (and the only way) Wallace could have got elected, but demographic, drastic boundary changes in 1986, led to the election of the first Republican governor by majority-white voters, so Wallace, who you could hardly call a Democrat anyway, was out of office.
It's an interesting quirk of political history that the two main US parties have essentially swapped positions on just about everything from how they started.
