it's the sort of thing my dad or grandad said to my nephews when they did the same...no harm intended merely a personal observation...lighthearted.. PC brigade need to lighten up

think it would have been better just left.what was said was said.. why dig a hole ?
Because he was wrong, presumably.
either he is genuinely sorry to have offended some people, or he has an eye on his public persona and has been advised to apologise
Cos he wants to win SPOTY again next year.

You really think so jim?

How many uncles would have said exactly the same to their nephews perhaps in a jovial way?

"Why do you want to wear a princess dress, boys aren't princesses"?
Lewis Hamilton dresses like a princess...

Because though the video was posted in all innocense, it could be taken the wrong way. So the tweet was a clarification affirming his real views.
And he didn’t apologise to the ‘PC Brigade’ (whatever that is), he apologised to everyone.
The real problem is with the description "Princess dress" (or perhaps with the word "Princess" itself). It should be "Royal Dress", obviously.
I guess he figured out that it was one thing to have a genuinely held opinion about a lad effectively cross-dressing and perhaps forming a desire that may affect his life later; quite another to put the issue on the Net as a lifetime embarrassment to the child. Lots of kids play dress up. They may be devastated to see the mockery when old enough to understand.

Twitter - a tool of the devil and the downfall of many.

When will people learn to ditch it?
I'd rather "why do you feel the need to belittle a small child?" a rather more appropriate question to ask Mr Hamilton.
// why do you feel the need to belittle a small child? //

Except he wasn’t. He was playfully teasing the boy. The child knew that, and was very happy, not belittled.
I wouldn't be happy with his comments being said in private, but to then publish them on the WWW is shocking behaviour and definitely worthy of an apology.
True Groms, the child didn't look too bothered, still I really hope there was an adult within earshot who laughingly (but meant it!) pointed out that it was perfectly ok for him to wear the dress :-)
// I hope there was an adult who pointed out that it was perfectly ok for him to wear the dress). //

Hamilton knew it was OK to wear a dress, no one needed to tell him. He was joking with the child not chastising him. Hamilton tweeted a clarification precisely because people were taking his words literally, when in fact they were said in fun.
Why are people so offended on behalf of other people? It has nothing to do with me so I don't care! Had he said it about me, then I might have had an opinion.
Kathyann because he is a public figure and his comment was put in the public domain.
Could use that against any news story though couldn't we Kathyan?

"it didn't affect me, so therefore no need to post owt"..?

He should not have tweeted this to his millions of followers in the first place.

Furthermore as someone with highly questionable dress sense himself, he should understand that people in glass houses...etc.
