There's really no need for such a struggle, the reason it exists is because of the refusal to work with the AfD who have 92 seats, more than the CSU who are in power with only 46, more than the FDP with 80 and more than the Greens who have 67.
If there is another election I think you will see the AfD numbers soar - which is Merkel's greatest fear - and then it won't be a matter of choice, they will have to become part of the Government.
