This is in nobody's interests yet the democrats demand unreasonable measures to support common sense.

The Democrats are in a minority in the Senate, albeit a tiny one, so some Republicans must have voted with them.
Latest news is that thousands of workers have been sent home and they will not be paid.
America has had months to prepare for this new budget, so how on earth can it go pear-shaped at the last moment ?

Does anybody see any sense in this ?

Who is gaining here ?
I remember much the same happening here in Liverpool in 1985. The council, under the control of the Militant Tendency, refused to set a budget and hired fleets of taxis to go round handing out redundancy notices to employees. Remember Derek Hatton? You will see the like again if Momentum have their way.

remember Derek Hatton? PMSL! Mikey has a "I love Degsy" T shirt!
Jack....leaving aside Liverpool, who is to gain from America shutting down ?

As Jack has suggested, some Republicans must have voted for this.''

Lets see how Trump wriggles out of this shall we ?
No more so than when the Republicans rejected the budget in 2013 that resulted in a shutdown.

Apparently, everyone thought there was a compromise to be agreed whereby the Democrates would agree to the budget in return for a softening of the ban on ‘Dreamers’. But that bit the dust in Trump’s sh!thole rant and non agreement.
I guess the Wall will be on hold a little while longer.
The Senate has 100 members and 60 votes are needed to pass the budget. It went 50-49 voting along party lines. 10 votes short of being passed.
I feel sorry for anybody holidaying in the States at the moment. The last time this happened, all the National Parks were closed. Imagine saving up for a holiday of a lifetime, to see the Grand Canyon, or Yosemite, and then finding it shut !
Thank you for the correction, Gromit. I did not realise that more than a simple majority was required.
I'm looking forward to it are you ,? could start the end of Trump , PMSL LOL.
Gullier....I agree that its all grist to the Mill.
Funny old World. The last time this happened(remind me again who was POTUS) we never heard a peep. Now it is headline "news" on every bulletin, radio and TV, from, you're ahead of me again here aren't you, the good old Beep Beep See. What's it got to do with them? Or us? More conflated hubris for the bottom feeders to gobble up.
It may well mean something to any of us going to the USA imminently.
//we never heard a peep.//

What on earth are you talking about? It was reported all over the place. It was major international news.
Kromo is right Togo....it was all over the news at the time. This has very little to do with Trump, but its the way that American politics works.

However, the ball is firmly in his court, so we will see how he wriggles out of this situation
Jackie - yes you are quite correct
Oh ! those were the days - Derek Hatton was NOT leader ( knight was I think ) and I think now he agrees that his job was to run a city and not conduct politics ( or not)

You seen today's viddies of Walton Gaol ? The streets were like that.

Derek Hatton conducted a foreign policy ( going on jaunts and good marxists being entertained in the 'pule ) - and yes if you displeased him you really WERE exiled to parks and gardens - and the head of parks and gardens really couldnt read! (or write)

Dems stateside
The president is showing he doesnt know how money bills get passed - they needed 60 votes. way away.
and as for party block voting - er that is what they do in London innit ?

The Duke of Wellington - not a great success as Prime minister in 1828 - said of his Cabinet -
"They seem to think my instructions are a basis for discussion !"
( but he also said - "the time for change is when it becomes absolutely overwhelming" - and of the Reform Parliament 1833 - " I have never seen such a load of bad hats in all my life!" kinda didnt like it then )
// The last time this happened(remind me again who was POTUS) we never heard a peep. //

yes we did Obambam in 2012. it was news because things didnt just stop - there was a demonstrable on-cost. They sent out taxis to tell people not to come to work. - or to come to work still - something
Used as an example that stopping work to save money - - - may not save money.
Told you it has just been on Radio 1 News? And radio Gaga.^^ :))
