The mother of murdered toddler James Bulger has accused the authorities of "colluding" to cover up his killer's behaviour and has branded his 40 months sentence ‘a farce’. There are also calls for his anonymity to be lifted before he strikes again. This is the second time since his initial release he’s been jailed for possessing such images, described by the judge as "vile" and "heartbreaking", so the question is are we too lenient on people like him and does there come a time when we should decide to throw away the key?

Thanks BM x so is there a minimum to serve for under 18s?
And thanks Islay x I'm not saying it's right necessarily, but that's what it is here.
Absolutely and this program was trying to explain more about it - I found it a very intresting program that looked at things factually without the emotion.
There is a starting point now (I'm not sure what the law was back in the 1990s) that the minimum term is 12 years. (15 for adults, I think).
Ah ok- thanks.
All I know is that whenever I see Denise Bulger on TV and witness her pain I just want to give her a big hug and let her know I am on her side. I think that she will forever beat herself up for letting go of James' hand to pay for her food, poor soul. I can't say on here what I really think about Thompson and Venables, it wouldn't be allowed !

Yes naomi, we are too lenient on people like him ...
Wasn't the age lowered here because of this case?
The part of the brain that allows you to think through your action does not develop until you hit puberty

That is hard to believe.
I don't find it hard to believe that they hadn't really been able to think through the consequences of their actions as an adult would. I don't imagine for a minute that they realised they would become the most hated people in Britain for example, and spend the rest of their lives in prison or hiding.
It's given as fact in the film Talbot. I didn't know that so it's news to me as well.

So what's his excuse now?
Even if it has been given as 'fact' I still find it hard to believe.
It was the prefrontal cortex
Naomi no where did I say that's he was using as his defense - I said it was discussed!
obviously not normal to want to download pictures of child porn, id say not a person one would want living in society, not forgetting he actually murdered another child when he was a child himself, what goes on in his mind...ill just say, he's a danger to society at large, specially children, seems to have preoccupation with them, and that's not healthy, i don't think he can be reformed, he had his chance..nuff said
He had two chances. Two new identities.
This explains it and also confirms it doesn't develop fully until later on. BTW I am not making excuses for them at all, just interested to find out if what was said is true.

Ladybirder, there are just some things I refuse to believe. I'm filing this one in the 'god' drawer of the cabinet.
If a kid was caught stealing sweets out of a shop, Id believe it, but very young children learn not to hurt each other and especially a baby. I don't care how young they were, they knew what they were doing was very very wrong. They just didn't understand the consequences. But isn't that what prisons for?
LOl Talbot. Good for you.

Of course, Venables will have a fully developed prefrontal cortex now so they can't use that as a way to explain his behaviour any longer.
For whats its worth I think that we *ALL* are the result of both nature and nurture. We cant help but be a (by) product of what we are, genetics, upbringing, psychology, brain chemistry etc.
Havnt got any answers unfortunetly ....
