Or is there more to this story since he also dares to fly the Union Flag outside his pub?

One reader stated "I am sure he is a member of both UKIP and Britain First".

But then this reader identifies himself as a French PhD Scholar, from Paris, France, so who knows?

Interesting point about younger black people.

I have no idea what their opinion of golliwogs actually is.

They would’ve grown up in a world where that word has fallen out of favour as a derogatory term for black people!!!

For that remark you get to wear a Golly Badge on your lapel.
Seeing as we’ve had the drinker’s opinion, I’m going to send the photo of the bar to my 25 year old nephew.

I’m going to ask “What do you think of the dolls in this picture”.

Genuinely interested in his view.

He might not actually have one.

Again - he shouldn’t be seen as representative of anything...just something I’m curious to find out.

I have just realised, how dare they call their pub 'The White Hart'?

Surely as an Uncle of 25 years, you should already know your Nephew's views on such matters.
I wish he'd fly his Union Flag the right way up outside his pub.
The pub name in this instance comes from Heraldry.

// A white hart featured as the badge of King Richard II//
Yes Sp, shame on you for not knowing his view on everything.

What does he think of antimacassars?
Brilliant, Mamy.

No i didn't !!
Oh all right then - i did :-)
I hope the landlord gets to keep his display. That better spath ...
The pub is in Grays which used to be multicultural in the times of Tilbury docks just down the road.

I genuinely believed that people under the age of (say) 35 would’ve even know what these dolls are.

In fact, mamy’s comment makes a lot of sense here. It would be surprising that anyone young person would know what an antimacassar is, as they’ve fallen out of use too.
Shockingly, our local pub is called the Black Bull- has a huge sign above the door with the name on- in full public view! Why it hasn't been firebombed by the PC crowd yet or been forced to have t's name changed to the Colourful Bovine (non Gender specific) is beyond me.

I wonder if that is more or less offensive than knitted gollies?

Hazi

None of that makes sense.

The words black and white are no offensive - it’s context.
Hazi

You understand the difference between minstrels, golliwogs and the word black - right?

/// Yes Sp, shame on you for not knowing his view on everything. ///

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, even if certain ones find it funny.

But to get it correct, Sp isn't expected to know his Nephews views on everything but as a close fellow black person one would expect him to know his views on racial matters.
*whispers* what's an antimacassar?

golliwogs shouldn't be displayed like this and not in a pub where people are drinking, as you can see on this thread, there are strong opinions and racist connotations even if none are meant (although i doubt that here) , strong opinions and booze don't always go hand in hand...

I should imagine Sp and his Nephew has more pressing matters to discuss and it wasn't sarcastic - it made a point.
