Re the main topic, it matters not a jot to me whether this Landlord wishes to make a stand re his Gollies.
I think his bar back looks very cluttered and messy full stop.
I had a Golly as a child ( wasn't my favourite, got slung in the toy box with lots of other toys).
They don't offend me, but I think they've had their day in the limelight - though doubtless they'll continue to create stories like this for some time to come.

I have no real feelings either way, but one thing I do think. While people continue to link them in the way they are doing here then it will just perpetuate the problem. Perhaps just best to leave them as historic dolls and move on?
Yes, I had one. Also had the badges from the jam too, lots of them. At the time I didnt really get a link to black people, clearly the innocence of youth.
SP, a valid point on whether Black people had them, however in those times in alot of the country it was rare to see a person of any colour so I guess not many had black friends either. We did have two in our school but it was a private one and they were boarders from somewhere wealthy abroad. I dont recall any animosity to them (and no they were not called strangely brown) it was not that kind of public school.

How can both of you compare an antimacassar which I doubt most of mature adults wouldn't know what one was with a doll that has so much publicity over the years, a doll that I grant most children have seen never mind 25 year olds?

OK, so my point wasn't clear to some.
AOG seemed to suggest that Sp should already have known his nephew's opinion of an old fashioned toy, I wondered if that also included other old fashioned items too.
With the best will in the world we can't know everything that our younger relatives do or don't know.

It left greasy deposits on the backs of armchairs, so people put detachable cloths called antimacassars on the backs of chairs to catch the oil, and they could then be washed, protecting the chair itself.
They are now an outdated accessory - and the point about raising them here is that they are consigned to social history in the same way as golliwogs.

his view on anti macassars?
he would doubtless say that the young bloods of 150 y ago thought that bear grease combatted baldness. My father commented ( a bit like Checkhov) if that were true no one would be bald. And it got over the chairs. I mean we werent allowed to cry in the Front Room - snot all over the plush furniture.
But now bears are a protected species - there is much less bear grease and so .... the antimaccassars as useful as they are need to washed much less often.
evey night I look at my bed board and think - jesus I should have bought one of those antimacassar things twenty years ago
