Us School Shootings
Why does it not occur to genius Trump that no matter how mad a person is if he cannot acquire a weapon then he cannot shoot anyone? Of course Trump is backed and subsidised by the NRA.

Incidentally, Hillary received more funding from the arms industry than any other Presidential candidate, Trump the least.
In fact, I may be wrong here but I believe she received more than ALL the others, Democrat and Republican, put together.

I have always stated the same fact when these dreadful murders occur, and we discuss them on here -
Even discussing the limitation of guns in the US is political suicide, and every politician knows it. Obama was able to make more noise because he was in his last term, with nothing to lose, he would never have spoken out during his first term.
As advised, the 'frontier' mentality is still front and centre in the American psyche, and shows no sign of being diluted anytime soon.

You're right about the 'frontier' mentality, Andy. Every time I've been there, I've been struck by how there is still something of the Wild West about the USA, as witnessed by their enshrinement of the right to bear arms and there huge (in my view, absurd) prison sentences. In some states you can wander around a supermarket openly wearing a gun a holster.

Spathy...that is indeed what Trump thinks, but like most of what he thinks, its daft and childish. //
Ah, here we go. I wondered how long until the name calling started.
Right Mickey, answer me this: Do you seriously think that is guns were removed (ok impossible but go with me) from the US these mass killings would stop?

These deaths are completely at the hands of the NRA and their lobbying efforts in the House and Senate.
The people *want* more gun control
http:// news.ga llup.co m/poll/ 1645/gu ns.aspx
Gallup is as non-biassed as I can find. But there is plenty more out there saying that many US citizens want better control of guns and gun ownership.
This one shows neutrality across all ages and genders, but more educated people and black peole want more gun control. Less well-educated white males over the age of 50 are the most strongly in favour of less strict gun laws.

This article suggests that the emotional reaction to the recent events in Florida and elsewhere drives the gun-control feelings, but peole quickly forget. And then the NRA lobbying kicks in. There again, certain older, poorly educated white males think CNN is fake news...

YMB...they would lessen considerably, to believe otherwise is counter-intuitive..
Someone else said on here that if they banned assault rifles, then the mad people would just find another way.
But the whole point of assault weapons, is that they kill quickly and efficiently.....that is what they were designed for. To be used in a military capacity, not as a hunting weapon.
Most people can understand this, and I would contend that most Americans can see the common sense in this as well.
We have to dismiss the widely-held belief, that all Americans are dim, badly educated rednecks. That simply isn't true. In the 40-odd years since I have been visiting the States, most people I have met, and all of my many friends and acquaintances, have no more wish to own assault weapons than we do.

//More name calling. I take it you vote labour? //
In what sense was that name-calling? I said certain poorly-educated older white males think CNN is fake news. It's a statement of fact.

Not that it's any of your business, but you're right; I have voted Labour, but not since 1997 (Blair). There again, I also voted Conservative in 1979 (Thatcher). More recently it's been on local politics rather than national politics. -Shrug-
Methinks your own insecurities are on show more than mine.

One of the main strands of thinking behind the NRA's position is that 'right-thinking people' with guns are a suitable antidote to 'wrong-thinking people' with guns.
The major flaw in that argument is that the difference between right and wrong thinking can actually be possession of a gun - the normally rational American citizen can turn into a wild-shooting maniac in a split second if a gun is available.
The idea that there are entire swathes of right-minded citizens out there who would support their local sheriff with their guns, and never ever fire a shot in anger is an absolute nonsense, and can only be countenanced by an organisation who has a vested financial interest in the sales of more guns.

can I in a spare moment point out the howling non sequiturs
if we removed some of the liberal 'human rights' legislation - erm this is UK law and not US - they dont have things like human rights in the land of the free - they have Guantanamo...human rights legislation has nothing to do with the growth of the belief that mad people arent criminally responsible.
M'Maghten rules 1843
//we could start locking up nutters//
Esquirel noted 1853 if you emptied the asyla you filled the prisons. Experiment tried again in the seventies and they found the prisons ....
locking people up is not a good treatment for mad people - the found that with George III around 1788
ho hum - those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it - once as comedy and then as tragedy

It the Guardian today, there was some sorry news of a Poll conducted amongst Republican voters.
Apparently 72% agreed that "the benefits of gun ownership outweigh the risks"
I don't know how many of the parents of the 17 children murdered yesterday voted Republican, but Florida is a safe Republican area.
I wonder how many of them would agree with the 72% now ?

Hi Spicerack
I think I understand - you thought I was having a cheap shot at Trump supporters?
That was not the intention at all. I posted a couple of links that were (I think) fairly reliable. The third was from CNN. I was acknowledging that some people (specifically older, poorly-educated white men, but others as well) think CNN is not a reliable news source.
You had your link; here is another:

My point was that CNN reports that US people get concerned about guns in the immediate aftermath of an atrocity like the one in Florida, but quickly forget about it. You appear to be confirming that some will not believe the story, simply because it was carried by CNN.
Is all.

kidas: you sure? you voted Blair, he was not Labour, he hijacked the party, a thatcherite, he stole the Tories clothes.

So if you support Blair but not the current Labour Party then you are, like it or not, a psuedo tory. PS if you think I am ultra Right Wing you haven't got much idea.
