Personally I think it is a great idea, there is nothing more annoying than someone sitting a table speaking in a loud voice, or a date sitting next to you always looking at their phone very off putting I hope this catches on.
What do others think?

I think that people who can't do without using a phone while dining out....should be shown the restaurant's door!

Sometimes the younger generation text, they prefer to contact that way and it's free, to call a landline takes from the call credit
I think it is a good idea. Last time I ate out, I was shocked to see on a table of 4 that all 4 diners were chatting away on their phones or taking pictures of their food instead of conversing with each other. They were all in their early 30's.
Hang on - if you get a discount for not using your phone - aren't you the same as people who don't use their phone ( if you see what i
mean )

So does the pub ask to each customer when they enter the pub -

1. Do you use you phone when dining ?

Answer yes = Discount if you agree not to use it
Or do they wait to see if you start using your phone and then offer a discount to stop?
OK...fine. Then don't go to that particular restaurant OR if you must, then forego the discount.

This is not all about ummmm, ginger and family, it is about mainly people whose evenings are ruined by mobile phone users and id offering a solution, which doesn't suit all.
Isn't that rare though? I don't see it often.

Also a lot of the kids on their phones are not texting. They could be checking the football results. As my boy does.
The pub advertises it's free wifi and multiple charging points so it looks like that mobile use is positively encouraged on the other 6 days of the week.
I wouldn't go to the restaurant for reasons Andy stated.
ummmm

"Isn't that rare?"

Depends who you ask. If you ask mobile phone addicts, they will say YES it is rare, but if you ask people who look forward to a quiet night out without mobile disturbances, the will say NO it isn't rare.
People around here seem to make such a din in pubs and restaurants that I don't think someone talking on their mobile phone would make much difference. The accoustics in places changed when they took out the carpets and put solid flooring in and you have to shout to make yourself heard.
///
Remember many people in restaurants have children at home and have their phones out just in case they contact them. ///

Your children are all adults
Did you read the answers. My kids are often out doing their own thing. Two have recently moved back in and don't have keys yet. So they'll give me a quick ring to see if I'm at home.
What a load of tosh. Someone on their phone having a conversation is no different to two people sat side by side having a conversation.

Admittedly, I don’t like being blared at by dodgy ring tones though.
get them some keys then
People tend to talk much louder on their phones then when talking to someone sitting next to them. So it is more annoying.

I only use my phone at a table if I'm showing my companions a few photos on it, or to check Wimbledon order of play for the next day if I'm with my tennis fan friends.
They can do that themselves. 2 of them work in town.

Eccles...agree. I don't like seeing people text though. That's very exclusive and takes much longer.

The brief phone conversation is infinitely preferable to an interminable whine.
There is a cafe I read about that has a complete ban on them. I assume they just ask for you to turn them off.

Who in their right mind would hand over a £600 - £ 700 phone for a discount of maybe be £10.
I'm 100% behind this!
And I also think kids would pay for a £300-£600 phone before they ever get around to getting keys cut for a £1.
