So us older folk who have worked and saved all our lives must bale out the kids because the little darlings are finding it too difficult? Life is difficult life is unfair, get on with it.

Already mugged of savings income due to unfairly low interest rates, they now want the generation who have had it better than previous ones, due to accumulating wealth in the country over time, to be able to grab even further finance from the older prudent generation to gift to themselves. The property ladder may be a little more difficult to get onto now, but...

He is right in one respect. If a house cost £5000 in 1970 the current price would be £53000, so house prices have well outstripped inflation.

You have not overstepped the mark, your figure for annual wage in 1970 is wrong by a factor of 6, we all make mistakes, the "crime" is to not modify your conclusion in light of the correct figures.

firmly on what? Not arithmetically as you have just admitted. Are you now using some other measure that we are not familiar with? Spathyconomics, perhaps? Similar to Abbotonometry?

but you have just admitted your figures are wrong and asked us to ignore them, how can they be "fact"?
LOL @ TTT.

I distinctly remember in 1970 passing the £1000 p. a. threshold. Average for a young person at the time.
Question Author
yep and spath based his figures on the £6k amount and they are still fact - apparently! No wonder the kids can't buy a house they can't do simple arithmetic!

Hang in there Spath, the truth will dawn, hopefully.
Question Author
well I think we all agree that arithmetic is the universal truth.
Aye, fire enough arrows into the air and one will land somewhere near the target.

1970 I was only on £750 p.a - a year later by changing careers I tripled my wages.

I can't be bothered to do the maths, but given that house prices were 4 - 5 times the average salary in 1970, dividing the average house price today by the average salary today should show how far spath is right or wrong.
Just a tip for you Spath - never do Maths homework in indelible pencil.
