If m Barnier is prepared to negotiate with a quasi-independent non-eu-member part of a member country (Scotland), how will he fare when catalunya and euskadi see the precedent that's been set and demand the same rights, in the face of frothing at the mouth by france and spain?

You fail to "avoid similar criticism" NJ because, like TTT, you use an expression which nobody understands. I think if you'd said "Sturgeon", "Mrs Sturgeon", "Scotland's First Minister" or "Nicola Sturgeon", the thread may have moved on some way by now.

Not that I have much time for Emily Thornberry or Nicola Sturgeon, but it detracts from the argument if you focus on their marital names and titles rather than the names that they are best known by.

You can't use Johnson as a fair comparison. He has three forenames, any of which he is entitled to use. There are very many people known by their middle names, just to give three examples from the world of politics: James Harold Macmillan, James Harold Wilson, Leonard James Callaghan.

It's very much in Brussels' interests to fan the flames of Scottish independence - more disturbance and discord on the UK side means a worse outcome after next March in the case of a no-deal Brexit. That will be why this meeting is taking place and equivalent support for catalonia won't be forthcoming.

Of course, this is a strategic position we have backed ourselves into unnecessarily, but that's another issue.

Given some of our Scottish ABers and their want to stay as part of the UNITED Kingdom, I'll promote that, otherwise let's undo the economic zip and let them flounder...and with an international commercial interest rate charged for what we have loaned and subsidised them with. I didn’t focus on them. I just used them, others provided the focus. I wouldn’t have done so if other posters were not relentlessly castigated for using humorous pseudonyms for the First Minister when no similar protection seems to be provided to other politicians who from time to time suffer in the same way. But let’s move on.

So did London. So did Northern Ireland. So did Acacia Avenue just round the corner from me. Alas, in common with Scotland, neither of those minor constituencies are EU members and the only constituency that matters - the United Kingdom - voted to leave.

Does that mean she wants to divorce him? After all she doesn't wish Scotland to be called part of the UK, and so wants to leave.
