50 years ago, rape was defined as the gratuitous use of a woman for sexual pleasure and one visualised the rapist breaking into a house and gratuitously having non consensual intercourse with the victim or waiting behind a bush as the victim walks by and is dragged into the undergrowth and sexually abused. The tell tale signs of trauma to the female genitalia of bruising, abrasions and bleeding.
The abhorrent old fashioned definition of rape.
Bringing us back to the present time, the definition of rape has now changed to any non consensual penetration of the woman by the male genital organ. if the woman says no, then penile penetration is rape.
How many male Abers can honestly say that they haven't had penetration with their wives and partners when it is obvious that he/she doesn't want to continue?
Very few i fear.
Today that is classed as rape and does, in my opinion account for the majority of cases of "modern rape." I do agree with Germaine Greer.
degrees of rape have been brought up by the M.P Kenneth Clark and this was not a popular pronouncement especially as he suggested varying sentences for varying "types " of rape.
I agree with Germain Greer.

I am not sure if you are correct in saying the definition has changed
sex wivvart consent - I cannot say I paid much attention to the 1956 act as it then was
in 1970s it was estimated that 2% were reported - so doubling the reporting rate would just raise it to 4%
if you double the prosecution rate ( which my fren' Ally has) then inevitably you prosecute 'the second division' that is cases less likely to succeed
and your conviction rate will go down
No one at the MoJ could understand that point when I made it - they are all history grads, classicists, etc.,

No Sqad, there is a difference between being voluntarily in bed with a partner, who fancies having sex, makes the move, and you can't frankly be arsed to say you're not really feeling it because it's quicker, pleasanter and less hassle to just let them get on with it, than ANY sort of rape. Plenty of women know that if they asked their menfolk to stop they would, but then you have to deal with the little boy lost rejection eyes, the inquisition about 'what's wrong' and generally making someone you love feel like crap. THAT isn't rape, that is lazy sex and that's not what most people consider rape either of either sex, she's off the mark here and dangerously so.

Kvali....I agree with all you say, but disagree with your conclusion.
This definition of rape has been discussed ad nauseam on AB and the very popular conclusion was "lazy sex" WAS rape, by our modern definition.
In fact when i admitted to occasional bouts of "lazy sex" one well known and popular female ABer called me a rapist.
No, what Greer is highlighting is thee the commonest form of rape is now......"lazy sex." Indeed that point was raised by Kenneth Clark some months ago when he suggested degrees of rape.......but he was lambasted for this.
