Surely now before any monies, benefits or property is given out residency records should be examined.

From what I've read, most of these fraudulent claims began just days after the fire when everyone was under huge pressure and hurry due to the immediacy of the situation.

Thank goodness they are being found out one by one.
That's entirely the problem..... There are few accurate records to reflect quite who was living where at the time of the blaze.

As Mamya says, those folks completely devoid of any shame in making such claims are being weeded out one by one. Thank goodness.
Better late than never that these disgusting frauds are being discovered & punished.
But the money wasted on them won't ever be recovered, will it ....
Highly unlikely, should they have said no to everyone in the first few days just in case then?

I wouldn't have liked the task of handling all this.
"..should they have said no to everyone in the first few days just in case then?"

No.They should have concentrated on finding similar accommodation for them and not housing them in luxury hotels whilst showering them with gifts, credit cards and Oyster cards.

As I have said in the past, had it been me I would have been told to sift through the ashes for my insurance policy and take it from there.
Trouble was too many people to sort in a hurry, it seems that everyone wanted to help but no one did any checks.
I agree NJ.
A large number of Councils include Insurance premiums within the rent - no one is disagreeing that things weren't handled at all well, I would imagine for most having to sort things out this was thankfully a first for them.
We may yet hear how common it is among certain cultures to dream vividly after viewing disturbing scenes on the telly.

He may well have been traumatised by what he believed to be a real event.

Or summat.

When he comes out of jail he should be barred from receiving any benefits of any type.
//A large number of Councils include Insurance premiums within the rent//
Ohh that's alright then. share the costs among other insured people next year. They had no more clue as to was "residing" there illegally than they do in the whole of London, or indeed GB.
My comment re insurance was in reply to NJ's reference to insurance and having to rifle through the ashes.
I have stated, I wouldn't have had a clue how to handle the immediate aftermath of such a tragedy - it appears others here do.

// No.They should have concentrated on finding similar accommodation for them and not housing them....//

the records show the council did diddly squat in the first days
and then held emergency closed sessions to discuss..... how to vary the appalling press they were getting for doing nothing.

Nothing new - the same happened 9/11
here is but one depressing site

I thought one in the Land of the Free had got away with $120m and said - "this was the dumbest thing I have ever done" when he was arrested
// I wouldn't have had a clue how to handle the immediate aftermath of such a tragedy //

neither did West Ken but they didnt ask for help

when they were ASKED if they needed help ( by the man at the ministry ) they initially said no they didnt think it was anything to do with them....

( remember they had hived off housing to a separate organisation)
Has anyone pointed out the council is not able to insure tenants possessions ?
they have to do it themselves

( the principle is - that to insure something you have to be able to mitigate the loss)

and has anyone pointed out that getting insurance for possessions if you are not a house owner is vv difficult.
( when Towyn was flooded in whenever, 60% were uninsured)
I've seen that said before - I have been a tenant for 40 years and have always had contents insurance.
yeah mama I remember the last time I said it
you said that....
Insurance company that does it ?
Currently with Age UK, forgotten the underwriters but have been with others over the years.
I wonder how many "fraudulent or false claims" were made in London between 1940 and 1942?
