It does seem a bit odd. I would have thought the people chosen to give evidence should be selected on the basis of whether they've got some relevant experience, knowledge, or insight into the subject matter rather then what age, sex, or shoe size they are.

Some people just don't get that it will take years for a closer balance and in some areas it simply wont be balanced - ever (both ways).

Yes Mammy, as more women stay in the work place and become experts it will naturally change (I hope). But you cant suddenly become an expert over night and for whatever reason rightly or wrongly not enough women over the past 40 years have been able to get on sufficiently to become these experts.

It wouldn't surprise me if the number 29 bus was stopped and the passengers checked for equality of sexes and diversity, but that will probably be next year..
Meanwhile, as form over function gathers pace these Parliamentary Committees will be just fine, questioning women experts on working conditions in deep sea trawlers, blast furnaces, coal mining and hundreds of other things they once read about in a novel.
This stuff is embarrassing, not least for the women concerned and this has been palpable recently on the likes of Newsnight, where women have been used as makeweight on subjects for which they were obviously ill equipped.

There is plenty of diversity on the two main news channels, if they are out on the street seeking the public's opinion on certain matters, it is generally a black female, followed by an Asian and then a white person.
