How Can I Find News Reports From 1970S

I grew up in the Bucks. town of High Wycombe and as a child I recall a shocking murder of a young woman, who was shot in her home, by her boyfriend. This happened up the road from where I lived, and at that time, serious crime in High Wycombe was unheard of, so it shocked the local community. I’ve put in a number of search parameters into Google as well as looking for archives in the main local newspaper, but can come up with nothing.

Your local library should keep archived copes of your local newspaper.
That is unlikely to be online though, you would have to go in person to the library.

It is now possible to get references "removed" from search engines by people involved or their relatives/descendants.

Establishment figures are over the moon about this feature of course.

First thing I'd do is speak to some locals older than yourself, they may be able to add more information to further your search.

As everyone else suggests, try the local newspaper archives. It's really weird there is a distinct lack of coverage of major crimes in the 1960's and 70's even in news archives though. When I was younger my mother pointed out a house in Worcester where a man who had been babysitting three young children decapitated them all and stuck their heads and bodies on the railings outside the house in the 70's. At the time I could find out absolutely nothing about it, then a few years ago he made an attempt to be released and the Daily Mail got hold of it but the local papers of the time hardly covered it at all, which I find completely bizarre given the nature of it.

I`m presuming the British Newspaper Archive is the site at the library that people are referring to. If you sign up with an email address and password you can have 3 free searches (chargable after that) Maybe you can use the free search for it

Possibly. The only real chance is a search of the newspaper archives at the library. Laborious, but should be successful

Thanks everyone. I no longer live in High Wycombe and rarely go there now. All I remember is the young lady was my mum’s hairdresser and her name was “Valda”. I’ve contacted the Bucks Free Press to see if they can help. Regarding the McGreavy murders, I had a boyfriend who worked as a prison officer and told me that McGreavy had been transferred to his prison and of his terrible crime, prior to that, I had never heard of these murders.
