Why do local authorities mostly advertise their "jobs" in the Guardian? Are they saying that they only want to recruit Guardian readers? Are they saying that in order to be a 5 a day consultant you must be a wishy washy liberal.

Think you have said it all Loosehead. After all dont want the scummy Sun readers in there representing the majority do we
Probably so they can avoid the hassle of having to bin your application, I'd imagine.

But I so want to be an Islamic outreach theatre workshop against the bomb counselor.

What were you doing reading the Guardian anyway Loosehead? I'd have thought just touching that paper would result in some vile skin dissolving allergic reaction for someone as right-wing as you? What do you read, BNP Daily!?..oops, I meant the Mail!

Don't like the sweeping generalisation? Well don't make them yourself then!!!

value for money. If they could afford to advertise in every publication in Britain, they would, but the cost would be huge - I can hear the outraged cries of AB ratepayers already. So they limit their advertising.

It may be that they think Guardian readers more likely to apply for their jobs, but it's equally likely that, at some time in the past, the Guardian deliberately set out to increase the advertising it prints by lowering its rates, and succeeded in attracting a critical mass of council ads.

That means it becomes known as the place where council jobs are advertised, and on that day every week, anyone who wants to apply for a council job will buy the Guardian - even if they buy the Sun the rest of the week. By the same token, the Times educational supplements are where teachers hunt for jobs even if they don't read the Times. It needn't have anything to do with the editorial pollicies of the newspaper itself.

I believe that the Guardian runs a feature on Wednesdays specifically for Local Authority job vacancies. The adverts aren't limited to the Guardian though, you will find the same adverts in their local papers and on their own council websites.

JB I said "mostly", how does that constitute a sweeping generalisation? I know you are so fond of SG's but are you now seeing them where they don't exist?

"they only want to recruit Guardian readers... you must be a wishy washy liberal" - ergo you're implying that all Guardian readers are "wish washy liberals".

You KNOW that's what you meant. And if THAT'S not a sweeping generalisation, then I don't know what is!!

So are there any guardian reads out there that are not a bit leftie then ?

Can't somehow see any BNP votors buying the guardian ! (oh of course you dont have to buy it they often give it away)

Question Author

JB, "All" is not the default, except for you. When I write I generally don't mean "all", even if it may seem like that. What I mean is that if your target where WWL's then The Guardian would be the paper. I do of course I accept that not all GR's are WWL's, although I have never met one who isn't.

You are correct that merely touching the Guardian does have the same effect on me that green kryptonite has on Superman! So I don't of course buy it but over the years I have come to know that the G is where the local authorities advertise.

I mostly read the Express but I sometimes read a couple of bit's of my colleagues Sun but I never actually buy it.

Loosehead - unless stated otherwise, it implies ALL, not generally. And come off it, you know that this thread was only designed to take a pop at Guardian readers AND local government workers all in one go - and I'm sure you meant to take a pop at ALL of them, not just them generally. If it floats your boat, then do it, but don't act all surprised when someone works out what you're doing!!! :-)

I suppose it will shock you to hear that I'm a Torygraph reader!!!

is this a january_bug/Looshead thread or can the rest of us join in too ?
Question Author

I am having a pop at local authorities certainly and Guardian readers yes. I'm not trying to hide it so I'm glad you picked that up. I'm not having a go at council workers, who's doing the SG's now? I'm making fun of the "nonsense jobs" I think you know what I mean. I'm not having ago at the jobs that need doing.

Question Author
Get in Ymb, the distraction will be welcome.

Oh - the NONSENSE jobs, like working with Muslims!! Got you now - hearing you loud and clear!

Thought the original thread was on about 5 a day co-ordinators not about muslims, but since you mentioned it how many muslims want an interferring pinko in their business. Most I know are intelligent and hard working the last thing they want is the 'nanny state' round them.

There are many useless jobs advertised in the Guardian. Gordon has seen fit to put a quarter of the workforce on the state payroll. These people generte nothing to our GDP just suck us dry. AND no I'm not talking about nurses ets before anyone gets on their high horse

I should have thought that 5-a-day consultant would be an ideal occupation for a wishy-washy liberal: a job that is paid for by the state - so there is no pressure from an employer that needs results and efficiency - and involves interfering in other people'slives by giving them busybody advice based on frankly dodgy statistics. In the same way that Lynx advertise in FHM and Loaded, the Grauniad is just the place to advertise this job vacancy!
Question Author
JB, although I used Islam in my nonsense job example above, I was simply trying to parody the sorts of job titles that you get. YMB has a good point, the public sector has been massively infiltrated by non jobs and they are regularly advertised in the Guardian. Now I know to you lefties he's the spawn of Satan but Richard Littlejohn used to have a part on is show called non job of the week, that's the sort of thing I'm refering to so please don't make it sound like I'm going after islamic issues.
But you thought you would try to be contraversial by using the Islamic example...?
Question Author
No not especially, just plucked a selection of commonly used words (in these ads of course)
