Jim, //I'm impressed at how I'm being dragged into a discussion about Muslim face veils... //
Not me Guv.
Rockrose, //But they don't a lot have been 'homegrown' //
Where they’re ‘grown’ is irrelevant. Islam doesn’t recognise borders. Its people are one. That aside, if you can’t address vetuste_ennemi’s question, would you be kind enough to tell us why you support a system that subjugates women? I don’t understand that at all. I really don’t.
The question is open to anyone who would like to answer it.

Naomi- it seems to me you see things as black and white (not a race comment). Supporting freedom of choice does not imply supporting the oppresion of women. Besides, banning the veil would not in my opinion be a major step- more a symbolic one- in preventing the oppression of women which undoubtedly occurs

fiction-factory, //if we ban the veil do you think it will help relationships between the Muslim and other communities//
Absolutely.
//and will it help the elimination of Islam? //
Who mentioned the elimination of Islam?
Spath, okay, I’ll be more specific. Two women witnesses are required in place of one man; a woman is not allowed to teach men; it is not only allowed, but recommended, that men beat their disobedient wives, divorce is more difficult for a woman to obtain than a man. Shall I go on?
I’ve got to go out now. Back later when hopefully you will have given some serious consideration to what you’re endorsing.

the burka like the medieval Plague doctor mask, frightening...mmm
to me it says me, we will not integrate or assume your customs
whether by choice or if coerced otherwise, hijab is not so bad, but a niqab is again disguising the face, its how humans interact by seeing
another's face and expression, a smile smirk grin etc, id blanket ban the burka and niqab.

Anyway, if the police currently turn a blind eye to lots of crimes such as groups of young men (which now seem to be predominantly from one culture) meeting up in cars on car parks/rough land to trade and smoke weed, or look away when travellers are causing havoc, then I really cannot see them going into some areas and arresting someone for wearing a face veil

Naomi: okay. personally I doubt it will improve relationships in the short term- and I think it will put the police in a difficult position. Longer term i would not be as certain as you that it will help, but I would not be against teh idea on balance and hopefully in time this, and other things aimed at social cohesion, would hopefully improve relationships and encourage integration. I'm sure with lots of Muslim contacts someone like you could play a big role in encoraging/welcoming Muslims into your social groups.
As for asking whether it would help eliminate Islam in your opnion I just wondered what other advantages you thought would come from this. Or has reducing oppression of women and improving relationships covered it? I'd be happy with just those two by the way- provided we can get ove rthe initial hostilty and backlash

Spath, //i, as a english white boy, can not even question the culture, or actions of someone on the other side of the planet. //
Everything I mentioned is happening in this country … all of it – and you can add to that FGM, forced marriage, and underage marriage to that list – and yes, you, as a human being can, and should, be questioning it. Every right-thinking, fair-minded, citizen, without exception, should be questioning it. This is the west – and what Islam promotes, endorses, and gets away with, is unacceptable in a just and free society.
Rockrose, // I wonder how blind people manage so well with interaction then?//
The burqa is a visible barrier - and that renders the wearer pretty much unapproachable – and absolutely unapproachable to a man. It’s a garment that doesn’t encourage interaction of any description.
I can’t get my head around how some of the muddled minds around here work, but there’s me, vigorously defending the rights of the down-trodden - and somehow I’m the bad guy. Funny old world.
