I met a man who claimed to have been captured with him and honourable is not the word he used. However a death is always sad when the person is loved.

I think he would have made a good president. If he had chosen the right running-mate he may well have got there.
Yes, the only news item on BBC (where does the rest of the money go?), and an interesting, but I guess very temporary, distraction from the 24/7 "Get Trump" campaign by CNN.

When I was far from "young", but certainly "green in judgment" I was rooting for Obama and not for McCain in 2008.

My apologies to the real patriot, and may you rest in peace.

I am being slightly - perhaps massively - naive: all the Democratic tributes quoted by the CNN obituarists citing McCain's "patriotism" (that's a laugh in itself, isn't it?) and his "non-partisan" approach on issues of importance to America as a whole.

You don't need Turing to decode that, do you?

He was a poster boy for the swamp.
No doubt he'll be beatified by all the fake news outlets. (wonder why?)
An honourable man RIP
He served his country well, including 5 years as a POW in the hands of the Viet Cong. That couldn't have been any picnic.
To my shame I opposed a man who fought for his country, and supported a man who had two presidential terms trying to dismantle it.

A sad loss for America. RIP McCain.
A fine man indeed. From the days when America was spoiled for choice at election time.
He was an architect of one of the only serious attempts to change campaign finance law in the US. He openly defended his election opponent even from his own supporters when he thought they were wrong. Certainly he misjudged some things, but who doesn't? I will miss him. He had more statesmanship in his little finger than the current POTUS has in his whole body.
//He served his country well, including 5 years as a POW in the hands of the Viet Cong. //

He also refused to be released early without his men.
Seconded^^^
He became an unlikely hero for many when he showed that no matter the depth of political disagreement, respect for your opponents and a desire to work together with them is still possible and a goal worth chasing.

// .. the only news item on BBC ... and an interesting, but ...very temporary distraction from the 24/7 "Get Trump" campaign by CNN. //

// Certainly he misjudged some things, but who doesn't?//

he didnt misjudge it when he identified trump as a self interested plonker

and yes I do need a turing machine to decode some messages
explain please
PP, Trump said of McCain, "He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured? I like people who weren’t captured."
Trump couldn’t even get that right. He was a war hero not because he was captured but because of what happened to him and what he did after that.
Hopefully we’ll hear no more from Trump and his sarcastic ilk on this until a respectful period has passed
