I know who's side I'm on but I'll wait and see which way the thread goes.

Mamya - // Not really sure why you're astounded Andy, threads on this topic always have for for and against - they all blur into one eventually. //

You are right of course, it just dents (but does not damage!) my faith in human nature when people can honestly believe that a child who has been hit in the face by a stranger is going to translate that experience directly into an analysis of stupid behaviour, and the resolution to behave better in future.
A psychologist that kid ain't - but I bet he won't forget it - and I'd be willing to bet he won't do it again.
I understand and largely agree with the points you've made - maybe I'm just short on steam at the moment.

One thing is true , we are all different, were brought up differently in some cases and that won't change.

I absolutely agree - but speaking as someone who was regularly hit as a child, it has made me determined to treat my children as valuable human beings - and that goes for other people's children as well.

That means I don't go around randomly assaulting children in the street if they frighten me by being stupid and putting themselves in danger.

I have to maintain that I cannot see any scenario, ever, where that is an acceptable thing for an adult to do.
I was never physically punished at home thankfully, caned once at school (minor).

I have only ever once smacked my eldest Daughter , I was so shocked at myself and it did no good, I never did it again nor did I need to.

Well said Andy and Mamy.
The physical route is often quicker though I don't believe it's as effective as some say - when my Granddaughter was going through a very rough patch of mastering her autism , one day during one incident I returned her to the naughty step 39 times before she realised she was on a loser.
well slapping a child obviously makes them feel big and powerful. But for all their blustering I bet that if someone did that to their child they would knock the assaulter out
Reminds me something that really happened when I was a school kid. I was on a school bus when the driver slapped a kid for being rude and swearing. There was a teacher on the bus, so the child complained to the teacher. The teacher promptly gave the child another (harder) slap for being rude to an adult. The teacher also made the child appolagise
Naomi, I'm sure the child won't do that again. I'll bet you neither will the bus driver. !!!!!!
anneasquith, very rarely do I agree with you .... but I do on this one.
Indeed, but the child was stupid, the bus driver assaulted the boy. Sure to have a bigger impact on the bus drivers life i'd think .
I would hope so. Any adult assaulting a child, in any situation, is worrying. He is obviously in the wrong job.
I know things have changed, however when I was a kid that incident would have been nothing ( in my neck of the woods anyway ).
I have been slapped / caned and had the plimsoll off teachers and been slapped by policemen.
Doesn't make it right, Tony, it's lazy authority.
Maybe so tony, but I'm sure your peers suffered the same punishment. Now a bus driving assaulted a child and it's not common practice, thankfully
It's an uncontrolled temper.
Mme la mere ( the mother ) has lodged a criminal complaint ( contre 'X') - and wishes to be left alone ( ha!)
and the child is known in the school to be difficult
The french hack wonders how it all came to be filmed
