Ruth Davidson
Just heard that Ruth Davidson had given birth to a boy. The Scottish Conservative leader tweeted on Friday afternoon that she and her partner Jen Wilson named the child Finn Paul Davidson. He weighed 10lb 1.5oz. Not quite sure how I feel about this but wish wee Finn a long and happy life.

I've no particular concern over the needs and whims of the parents. It's the child's wellbeing I have greater concern over. //
I am sure that the gay AB'ers on here, some of whom are raising families with their parents, will be thrilled with your stamp of approval - if there are any gay couples of each gender who are together raising children, which I seriously doubt.
I think the idea of being gay and in a relationship takes the notion of both halves of the couple being of the same sex, as somewhat of a given

SparklyKid - // I am a step parent, I just believe that children should be raised/reared with a male/female influence. //
Then your view is even more incomprehensible.
By definition, if you are a step-parent, than you are in a relationship with someone who's relationship with the biological parent of your child went wrong, so you of all people should know that being a loving parent is more important that ticking gender boxes.

Rockrose - // Well if being raised with male influence means that you end up with the attitudes of some on here I would suggest it’s no great loss if you are raised by women only!! Of course some men are ok before you jump down my throat //
I do, and will to my dying day, wish that my father had played no part in my family or my upbringing. I have successfully managed to jettison every single thing he ever taught me by word or example, with the two exceptions of being able to drive a car, and being able to complain effectively, which have proved useful in my adult life.
The rest I would have loved to live without.

That is so sad and is probably the reason for your mindset.

“I think the idea of being gay and in a relationship takes the notion of both halves of the couple being of the same sex, as somewhat of a given”
Then that somewhat puts the kybosh on them raising children with both a male and a female influence and instead enter into a situation that I find most unsatisfactory and unnecessary. I’m simply trying to demonstrate that I don’t really care about the sexual orientation of the “parents”. Yes, I know some mixed-sex parents are appalling and some same-sex parents are wonderful. But generally I believe a child deserves a mother and a father. I also know that in some circumstances it is unavoidable that they lack one or the other but in this instance it is not unavoidable.
“I assume you are equally, vocally disapproving of any men you know who have decided to have little to nothing to do with their children?”
Yes I am – even more so.

My husband isn't the biological father of our two daughters, but not once has he ever used the word 'step' in the 21 years we have been together!

That ,of course, would be your daughters. I get fathers days cards from my wifes children, with the word step written on, quite touching.

Excellent. If only more men did that.....
SparklyKid - Some of us do know more than you do about this; especially as your prejudices will prevent you properly absorbing the information.

SparklyKid - // AH, you are miles of course here. My step kids grew up and left home long before I met their mother. //
Then they are not your step children, they are your wife's children from her first marriage, which is not the same thing at all.
// The issue is, I , along with many others, am not happy with this modern trend of same sex couples obtaining children, I do not believe it is healthy for the childs development. //
And I am sure that your wife, and her children, are grateful that they escaped being raised with your appalling Victorian notions that paying lip-service to society is more important that children being raised with love and respect for themselves ands the people around them.
If I had shown your attitudes my wife would not have allowed me within a ten-mile radius of our children - bigotry and homophobia have no place in a loving family.
