If we can be 'put under' in less than 10 seconds for surgery I can't see why a man needed to be writhing on the gurney for 45 minutes while being executed recently. Perhaps it is about revenge. In which case the whole death penalty in the US needs more debate about whether this should be used.

Every time an incident like this occurs, and is posted on here, the same posters offer the same reaction - which is a version of 'Great, I'd do it myself if I was there ...' or similar.

I find myself in line with the couple of posters who don't take this view, and are not delighted that this man has been assaulted.

It's not about not caring, it's not about being holier than thou - I do completely understand the feelings and motives of the majority of posters, but I can't join them.

To be pleased that someone has been violently attacked and to wish for worse, is to hold human life cheaply.

To hold life cheaply would mean I feel about life and suffering like Roy Whiting feels - and I don't want to feel like he feels, that would make me a lesser person, so I don't allow myself to rejoice in what has happened.

To be able to live in a culture that punishes people who don't value themselves, or others, then you have to be sure that you don't feel like the criminals do, because if you feel like them, then you are like them, and that is not a good way to be.

Let's hope so indeed, but to date, they haven't, so that experience cannot colour my thinking. If it ever does happen, and my view alters because of it, I'll be sure to let you know.

But for now, my thinking on any subject you wish to bring up is not, and cannot, be influenced by something that has not occurred.

SK, if Sarah's parents had been left alone with him and seen him on this earth soon after her murder then I would have defended them to the hilt - but not some no mark vigilante brute meting out his own version of justice.

A fair point.

The simple fact is, Roy Whiting has received justice within the framework of the laws of a civilised society.

Because some people view that justice as inadequate does not alter the fact that it is still justice - it's just not violent or final enough to satisfy the wishes of some posters.

Does anyone remember the case of Stefan Kiszko? He "confessed" to the murder of a little girl and spent years in prison. During his years there he was regularly subjected to rough justice at the hands of other prisoners. This treatment may have led to him developing schizophrenia.
I think it was advances in DNA analysis which eventually led to him being released.
If AB had been around when he was convicted the usual suspects would have been offering their services as hangman.
