The short term matters rather more to most people than the long term. If even 10% of the No Deal predictions are accurate then people would very quickly regret asking for it.

As to the EU's intransigence -- what do you expect? They're trying to protect their integrity, and have been pretty consistent from the word "go". It's not their fault that we didn't know what we wanted; that we didn't know how to achieve it; and that we didn't know whom we wanted to lead us into Brexit.

I expected reason, an acceptance that the remaining member states needed a good deal also, that it wasn't just about elites and control. We stated umpteen times what we wanted and they didn't move save to reject any suggestions and ask again what we wanted. That's no negotiation. That sort of consistency the world could do without.

I'm sitting here listening to May's speech, which is once again filled with defiance -- and I have to say, if nothing else: how can anyone truly believe that she's a traitor to the Leave cause? If she wanted to torpedo it, she'd never have signed Article 50 as quickly as she did. She'd never stick to her guns when all around her was collapsing; she would not continue to deny the existence of the third path of not leaving.

Incompetent she may be, but duplicitous she is not. I am not sure what else she has to do to convince people that she's committed the UK to leaving the EU:

"The people voted to leave, and I believe it is our duty to deliver that... we will be leaving on 29th March 2019." [emphasis from the original]

It's a funny definition of treachery to the Leave cause. Now, if she'd never signed A50, and if she'd cancelled it at the first opportunity, fair enough. But none of that has happened, and I defy anyone to name a PM who was more passionately and dogmatically committed to a policy when none of their colleagues was. Even Thatcher changed course from time to time.

Dead simple; she couldn't afford to sink it openly and immediately, for the damage it'd do her and her party, but if she keeps asking for stuff past any red line that defines what is vital as part of withdrawal, then she can keep us in, whilst claiming she's delivering out. Deceitful.

As has been pointed out, the polls were equally wrong before the referendum. So no point claiming sufficient folk have been frightened into voting to remain trapped now.
