How is the number 48 derived for the number of backstabbing letters necessary to trigger a no confidence vote?

Is it related to the number of MPs in that party ?

The majority of Conservative MPs supported remaining, so May will beat the ‘no confidence’ vote. Even when she wins her credibility will be zilch, but it has been for 18 months.
Then perhaps when all this Tory in-fighting has been sorted out, the Government can get on with more important matters.
